I've got a friend looking at a boat with one of these - I'm guessing the rig is between 5 - 10 years old.

Anyone had any experience with owning one of these? Personally I'm not really a Merc person - I've always found them a little more "agricultural" (noisy and rougher idling etc) than the Japanese motors. Looking around my circle of friends and family who have had Mercs and they seem to have had more than their fair share of issues.

Is this an accurate perception or have I been influenced by slick marketing?

I have a Mercury 50hp 2 stroke for 8 years - happy with it. Mercury have had quality issues in past no doubt - but some models are well regarded. My 10 cents worth? Better corrosion resistance than older Japanese motors of same age (I think the new ones now are all good), I like the styling, Also do you have a good dealer nearby? Certainly 4 strokes are more economical but if looking at buying an older motor 2 strokes are simpler and easier to maintain and will take more neglect. Having said that I would be wary of older optimax mercury and other fuel injected 2 strokes as they seemed to have to many issues in the past. It really comes down when buying second hand you have to look at what is on offer - check in with a local dealer and ask about the motor on offer as they will pick up servicing (or you can tell them that) are you happy with rig and how it goes? A careful owner who flushes after salt water use and regular servicing?. Genuine reason to sell - I dislike the guys who have thrashed boat for years and never done anything to it, say it never breaks down - means it due to go toes up on you!
Regardless of what you buy check it out first carefully as you can burn a lot of money buying a dud. My experience buying secondhand is I usually look for a few weeks and many boats before I find one I like. Cheers
Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish.

Very simple motors, not that much to go wrong. Thirsty but not horrendously so, mine (90hp on a 5m RIB) gets 1.1nm/l with a normal load in good conditions. Reputation for being quite grunty. Trim motors rust quickly under the paint and look horrible, though I think they last quite a while before actually failing. Rough idle, which is a pain but ultimately not much of a problem. Tricky to start but ok if you follow the right procedure. Mine needed repairs to the starter motor but that may have been more to do with the previous owner somehow filling it with water...

So functionally I think they're fine, only reservations would be fuel/oil consumption and resale.

I had a 2007 90hp for six years without a problem except for the solenoid which was replaced under warranty. They are a big volume motor at 1400cc but do run a little rough at idle but you get used to it.

They do as standard come with an SS prop which gives a little better performance.

I would and do have another Merc.

My 98 75hp merc (detuned 90) did 850 hours Still had (tested) 100% compression and the only problems I had was one of the trim sensors packed it in, the motor wouldn't always go down. Replaced it. Also I wrapped the hydraulic ram in Denzo........ as above it was starting to corrode.
Sold it as I figured I'd get better $ than over 1000 hours. Now have a 4/

I've had two, on my second one, bought new 4 yrs ago, maintenance, flushing and a good wash down with soapy water helps keep them fine would happily recommend them.
theres probably better motors and worse, i had an  old 70 hp blue band, had no idea of history gave me a great run and is still going i believe.

just be wary of fob off stories, or no history of service etc.

Apparently we're looking at a 1 quite pedantic owner less than 50 hours and serviced every 12 months.

My Father has one - a 2005 on the back of a Fi-Glass Dominator.  It's at approx. 300 hours now and no issues at all.

A bit rough at idle when cold, but nothing major. It starts first pop hot or cold and has more than enough power for the boat.  We have found it to be very fuel efficient - maybe the light boat helps.

Would recommend.

I have the 115 version, probably same block.

500hours plus now 6 or 7 years old cant remember. Has been a good motor I'd say for a carburetor 2 stroke. I really cant complain about it at all.

I haven't got all the details yet but I think this is also a Dominator. How do you find the boat?

Retired careful owner is gold!
However do a compression test (a shop can do for you) if not used much may have corrosion issues, they like to be used regularly like any motor and regularly warmed up, though that said 300 hrs is bang on regular use over that time - I have been told my Merc 50hp should be good for 2000 to 3000 hours and has now done 300hrs in 8 years. Cheers

[/QUOTE]

We find it to be a great boat taking the size into consideration.  We have a larger boat for more offshore use, but for inshore fishing and a bit of water skiing the Dominator is good around rig.
Fishing two up is great, three okay and four is very tight.

One issue for me.  The anchor well is too small for 100m rope and the anchor and chain.  We have to store the anchor and chain in the cabin.

The Dominator I'll be looking at is a glass one so I'm assuming it's a Figlass.

Take it to a shop and get them for a report on motor compression etc. I would read the first post on this thread, sounds a bought right.
