In order to throw some light on some of the "real-time" and "actual" fuel usage figures being achieved by forum members, I thought I would start this thread so we can all contribute through the season.

This is particularly so during the game season - because as we all know, the price of fuel is not dropping and a day's trolling is starting to get nearly as expensive as a shoreboys night at the New Brew.

If you can, please fill out the following criteria with each post.

Date:
Boat:
Size:
Weight:
Engine:
Prop diameter and pitch:
Weather conditions and general usage (i.e. snapper fish coz that's where it's at; or gamefish trolling).
Hours on water:
Fuel used:
Trolling speed:
Other notes (such as consumption during trolling speed.).

What do others think? Is that too much info - can we cut it down a little?

Nobody has ever come up with a great idea after a second bottle of water.

Boat: (Sam B J) Surtees 6.1m Barcrusher
Size: 6.1
Weight: 1800???
Engine:115hp 2 stroke
Prop diameter and pitch: 18p
Weather conditions and general usage: Flat calm, Game fishing
Hours on water: 7
Fuel used: 118L (bout 166km trip)
Trolling speed: 6k
Other notes:
Bout an hours run out at 24k, then trolling for 5 hours at 6k. 8L per hour at 6k, 35L per hour @ 24k = 118L
If I upped the troll speed to 7 > 7.5k then fuel econ went out the door.

Prop diameter and pitch: std
Weather conditions and general usage: Flat calm, Game fishing
Hours on water: 8 hrs
Fuel used: 97L
Trolling speed: 7.0 - 7.5knts
Other notes:
At 1600-1800rpm engine runs best without foulling plugs and creates best water....tried engine up but little difference. Also used Red Bull cans as teasers. Noticed largest lure with angled face worked best at all speeds...but under 7 knts all my others with cupped or rounded faces performed poorly. 75 naut miles with 30 @ 23 knts and 45 @ 7 knts ..don't have fuel use gauge but overall ran at around 12ltrs/hr. Hours on water: 9.hrs or 65miles
Fuel used: 52lts
Trolling speed: 6.5 - 7.5knts
Other notes: about an hour and a bit travelling time at around 20-25 knots with a few bursts for 5 mins upto 40knts just to see if its propped ok....it was! trimimg motor right out at trolling speed seemed to give better lts per mile motor, seems to use between 0.30 and 0.70 of a litre per mile depending on trim wind swell current etc

On a more serious note:
I was talking to another Honda 150 4-stroke owner who's engine has done fifty hours more than mine (275 vs 225). I told him about my consumption (or lack thereof) on Saturday and he swears that his motor is using less fuel the more use it has. I think  he's right. Would this be because things are "bedding in" better and the engine isn't working so hard for the same revs?

Hey TZer,  yup traded the suzi,  to be blunt I didnt like the thing that much due to a few niggles id had with it, especially after a weekend trip to the barrier with three of us on the boat and a load of gear it was always dragging its ass badly and the torque or lack of it loaded up meant the fuel bill was pretty high, dont get me wrong it was great for a 4 stroke, but after living with it for a while I have just decided that after already owning an etec before id rather have one than a 4S, i think that with my plans to keep this rig for a very long time that if a 4 stroke goes wrong after the warranty runs out  it would be outside my means or skill to repair it, also now the thing is on the plane at a lot lower speeds (more torque 50kg lighter) its got a lot more grunt it doesnt drag its ass and rides even better and its miles quieter and quicker, according to the same fuel comp i had when the suzuki was on her its better on fuel by a long way especially at trolling speed than the suzuki even with an extra 25hp,  yea i have to buy oil but a $500 service a year buys me a lot of oil!!

Looks like the fuel economy winner is the ETEC?
A mate has imported some Navman fuel flow meters from the States for some jet boating mates, 1/2 price compared to locally including freight (usual story) and they were manufactured in NZ...
I'm keen to get one and fit it to the Buccaneer... fuel economy with the 115 Johnny is not as good as it could be (about 30L/hr). I figure that with the fuel flow meter I should be able to set the trim and rpm up for best economy vs. speed?
