Fishing ReportsThe Store Report 10/11/00Just a wee report for those lucky anglers who are able to sneak off this weekend to take advantage of the great variety of fishing available in the Taupo region at the present time.
We have had a little rainfall at the begining of the week, which has freshened the tributaries on the Eastern side of the Lake. This rainfall
inititially gave us a little colour to the water, along with a little additional volume. As a result a number of fresh fish have moved into all
the rivers but with little angling pressure allowing those anglers who were lucky enough to be on the water some relief from hooking into mainly spent or mending fish.
We have also had significant drops in baromic pressure which usually results in either rain or a southerly change. This often triggers a
number of fresh fish into the local tributaries.
With higher than normal Lake levels for this year of the year, and extra volumes of water in all the tributaries, the fish are inclined to move
through the lies quickly. Which in turn makes it quite difficult for those who fish the lower ends of the tributaries to read the water.
With the little pressure at present, one is able to fish just about anywhere without meeting angling pressure.
The Tauranga Taupo has a significant number of fish present at the momment, some quite visable to the naked eye and fishing with flurocarbon, small naturals and networking the water providing good results.
The large volume of water which deludged the river in the latter part of October has made some real marks as it has in many of the 69 tributaries
which flow into Lake Taupo. Much of the debris that was chocking the middle and lower reaches of the Tauranga Taupo has been washed out. In some cases replaced with new debris, but in many lies, it has opened or freed water which will provide us with greater water source through the summer months or until another rainfall changes the pattern once again. Often it is hard to read
the water and find the newer lies, but network the water, starting close to your body, moving slowly through the water, allowing the nymph or your pattern of choice to sink before moving on. Often lies just move a foot or two and its very easy to miss, by the way of your drift, or cast.
Keep your leader short. I use 9ft to my heavier nymph and 12 inches to my lower nymph, allowing you to keep in contact with your nymphs.
Many of the smaller streams like the Waimarino, Waituka and Hatepe have fished according to river volumes and colour.
The river mouths have been fished according to the wind direction, which has mainly been easterly this past week. Quite uncharacteristic for this time of the year and difficult for anglers to read when fishing stream mouths.
The smelt which are normally abundant at this time of the year have been slow to yeild, due mainly to the unseasonally cool southerly winds and the huge amounts of water which deludged the Lake edge taking some time to clear
during October.
Roll on summer. There is certainly some activity around the river mouths, the easterley wind favouring the eastern shores, but aggravating the western bays. The Tauranga Taupo has hosted a
number of boat fishermen over recent days, fishing deep, mainly with White Boobies and Smelt patterns. A number of good conditioned fresh fish are being taken but there are many spent fish amoung those being caught.
My favourite, the Waitetoko stream has had the rip blown along the beach in a southerly fashion and makes it hard to read. Fish with the rip, lots
of fish are present, all in great condition and feeding on smelt. Fish after dark, they are very close, at your feet, Lumo Doll is all you need.
If lake fishing try the margins. Troll inside the 200 mtr mark with Yellow Lady's, Olive Woolly Bugger's and Green Orbit's. If you are able to troll a little deeper, use a Black Toby or Yellow and White tazi or Cobra.
Good luck and should you required any further info please dont hesitate to call us anytime 073868953.
