    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="https://www.fishing.net.nz/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=68415">Sea Mashed</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 111904<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 09 Sep 2015 at 8:21am<br /><br />Hi Tom,<div></div><div>I ponder over the affectivity of outboards v diesel, 4 stroke v 2 Stroke&nbsp;all the time, the guys running Diesels seem to be catching fish all the time but&nbsp;is it the motor or&nbsp;are&nbsp;they out there twice as much being more&nbsp;dedicated to the sport?&nbsp; </div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>My experience with 2 strokes and Harmonic's has lead me to the conclusion that you just have to be where the fish are in the first place to raise them.&nbsp; Our Surtees is running a Evinrude ficht that is somehow still going after a thrashing&nbsp;13yrs later.&nbsp;It trolls at about 6.5-7.5 knots and 9-10l an hour.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>It took me a few hours on the water but&nbsp;the first fish I ever hooked on it was trying to eat the bungee 6ft from the transom,&nbsp;You could have gaffed it!&nbsp; We had a double up this year that also had a fish right in behind the boat so they obviously don't mind the sound, but I definitely wouldn't call the boat a fish magnet.&nbsp; I say all this&nbsp;as I'm currently looking a getting a&nbsp;4 stroke bolted on the back!&nbsp;The hours on the water are just some much more comfortable without the old two strokes banging away in your ears.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>I&nbsp;had a little stabi with a Mercury&nbsp;Opti for last summer, only did one day on it out the Manukau but bagged a fish slow trolling a livey so&nbsp;they mustn't&nbsp;mind the Optis either.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div>]]>

Hence why Joker above with his 4 blade (or larger diameter/ cupping has so much less slip bottom end... combine that with slightly higher pitch and things get even better.<br><br>]]>

It does not have the hump&nbsp;when moving from displacement speed to on the plane that most hulls have. There is no appreciable increase in miles per litre when going past displacement speed either.&nbsp;It makes for economical game trolling.&nbsp;</div>]]>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="https://www.fishing.net.nz/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=52371">waynorth</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 111904<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 27 Aug 2015 at 1:32pm<br /><br /> 150 Suzuki 4 stroke on a 6.1 Surtees, so theoretical hull speed of just over 6 knots. 2000rpm about 6.7 knots = 7-8 litres/hour. 2200rpm just over 7 knots, fuel burn up to about 9-10. <div></div>I now trim the motor almost all the way down - way lower than planing trim.&nbsp;Probably gives a few extra inches of waterline length, but can't really say it makes any difference to the speed or economy.&nbsp;What it does do is create a lot less turbulence behind the boat - I wonder if the white water/looks like a school of fish theory is necessarily desirable, at least with short outboard driven trailer boats.&nbsp;&nbsp;<div>&nbsp;</div><div>jakepittsville those are pretty impressive figures</div>]]>

I troll at around 6 knots and use about 7-8 l/hr. Try to go any faster and fuel consumption goes up quickly for very little increase in speed. I am looking at trying a slightly bigger prop next year to see if I can get the same trolling speed with less revs and hence less fuel consumption.]]>
