14-17m - colour doesn't seem to matter much, yesterday I was using an orange 40g head with a yellow skirt on my main rod, and a pink/lumo 80g head with yellow skirt on Rodney's rod.

I don't really report much, but lately I have been out most weekends off the north side of the peninsula, catching fat pannies on 40-80g kaveman kaburas. A lot of the fish are spitting up bits of crab and mantis shrimp, so I think the kabura is a good match.

Out on the firth this morning, sea was flat as but water was quite a bit colder than a couple of weeks ago. I had picked up some jerkshads from Kaveman so I was keen to try them out.

Fishing in 12 metres there was a good bit of current as I was drifting along a bit too fast for my liking. This is where micro jigs work well, because of their shape they get to the bottom quickly and stay in the zone longer.

I was dragging the Kaveman Shad’s on a 5/8 jig head and they worked really well picking up some nice fish on them around the 400 size. These are good quality for the money well worth checking out.

Came home with 7 snapper caught on both micro jigs and soft baits. Has been a while, however, finally got out with a friend today. Shot out to Home Bay. Motutapu, at 5am this morning.  Tide was too big to Fish their usual spot. Put down a set line and commenced fishing. Five fish in total for the morning, including one keeper from the set line. Hard dirty work as my friend only uses bait. Absolutely stunning day on the water. Was great to finally get out again. No milky fish in the 5 which was a bonus. they are not uncommon in quite close around the gulf, I've seen some good size ones caught very close in on the northern coast at the eastern end of Waiheke, particularly Thumb Point. Monday 22/12/25

Fished off Flax Point near Rangitoto Island.  Fairly slow bait & berley session, but the reason for this report is I think a spotted a small thresher shark dealing to a just undersized gill-hooked snapper I had released.  The tail came out of the water and it was long, curving downward, thin and tapered to quite a sharp point.  Has anyone else seen threshers in close?
Kept a 32 and 48cm snapper and a 28cm trevally for sashimi (it was yum!).  Otherwise heaps of small snapper released, many of them from 28 to 30cms.
