Hi Folks! Having sold the boat am off hoofin it this week end (A new experience) and am lookin forward to it.   Hot Water Beach or the channel entrance to Hahei would be the closest to have a fish.  Any info on this area would be great.

 Thanks

X - Man, the 'channel you are refering to is Wigmore Passage (or Pass) on the southern end of Hahei. Getting down to the point on the rocks can be a mission, but some good fish have come out of there. Be careful tho, it can be a high traffic area. Just around the sthn corner can be good, but floating baits only, it's quite rocky. Have fun, Cheers.

Mate,

Excellent place to go.  It is one hell of a climb around the rocks, but can be worth it.

Hotwater beach is the one for me.  I have had some amazing fishing off those rocks, and I am jealous that you are going there.

I suppose it would be a bit too far away for me anyway, considering I am stuck in London!

Coming back to NZ for Christmas though, and will give it a shot there then!

Lethal,

How do you get access to the penisula there? I have always had to walk around the rocks from hot water beach, and it gets fricken tricky in places.

And how tricky is it climing down on the rope?

Curious to know

Hi Trent..... i just left the 4w/d at the gate and walked up the road and over the hills throught the scrub and down to where i always fished pasted some guy on the way out, i had this bloody big tail dangling over my head he just smiled and said looks like youv'e had a good day mate....

so yeah i just walked in and out, there was only one house up there then have not been there for awhile now though, you could ask the farmer at the end of Hot Water beach, if you could go through his property, he use to let us drive down and he even gave us the use of his old 10ft boat, his name was Nobby Maybe, tough old blitter had a row of boar tusks on the fence around the house, yep right around the house he shoot the lot all in that area, some 200plus pigs.......

Cheers Lethal

Hi Kerren......

it's funny how this is were i started most of my fishing and diving in this area some 40years ago..... and when i met my second wife i draged her down here to show her what i did in my younger years..... she would only go half way to the fishing spot i had in mind that day, and said ok this is it we go down here or we go back...... i had to give in when i saw the tears in her eye's from all the walking we had done, because i had taken a wrong turn and now we had walked twice as far as needed.....

that day she was pulling in this tidler when it got really heavy all of a sudden,  as the fish got closer it turned out to be a huge snapper and just as i went to get it this little tidler still legal snapper come out off it's mouth, so me being my normal self winds in my rig and just with a bit of skin for bait dropped it in front of this xxos snap to grab, and i was now into her fish in a big way, but all things turn out and we managed to land it......

but going back to when i was a kid we didnt even take bait to fish these rocky out crops along this coast, just some of the memories that come streaming back from fishing here would make a book larger than most, and stuff most people would never beleive could of ever happened....

like coming back to what they called a motor camp which only had tents in it, the 3 of us, myself, my step dad and his mate would have our three rangon cane rods over their shoulders with 4 or 5 fish weighing in from 15lb-20lb plus snapper hunging from them, and this was the norm for a days fishing along that coast then.....

and things like the Herald where dropped off by a plane and bounce half way up the hill side before stopping,

and when we started diving every pole in the tent that stuck up with a nail sticking up had a king fish tail attached to it,

when you wanted some meat you took the gun up to the cow shed and shoot wide pigs from beside the farmer while he was milking the cows, thats how close they came to the cow shed.....

it would take a good 8-10hours to travel to Hot water beach in those days in an old hillman loaded too the max, up over the tapu hill and down the other side, in those days there were only two houses in the whole place, and a little shed which was called a shop......

but we kept going back every year for about 9years in total, and looking back now i would say it was the best time of my life,  nothing i can recall would come close to those days we fished or dived in this area.......

what stuffed the fishing down here was the box net it took everything and once that was in place the fishing was really hard so we stopped going back....

untill i meet my second wife,  so thats a little insite to what i did when i was a kid....

Cheers Lethal

Geez Lethal ,I got a tear in my eye , that is just how it was to mate, a very different world from what we live in today.

But we still manage to live in the best place in the world, Cheers Spina.

Those darn boxnets... The first one was off Sandy bay, a little inside Devils Point. I remember on our boat nudging up to the net, and looking down seeing sharks both inside and outside the net patrolling along the perimeter, and also seeing heaps of dead fish rotting in the net(caught up). I remember a school of large kingies inside the net. These damn boxnets were just plain killers. The one off hotwater beach was set about a year after the sandy bay one. We seldomly fished south of Whitianga, so didn't notice the effect it had on Hotwater beach environs. We mainly (and still do )fished Whitianga - north, the Islands, reefs etc. The Sandy bay one tho', sure stuffed fishing inside the point.

Lethal, was that you guys holding us up over the Tapu hill, eh? It was us in the Studebaker, or then the Vangaurd trying to get past ya, heh heh heh.

Cheers Guys.

Hi Tomsta....

these bloody things were put in by the Japanese many moons ago just two of them thank heavens.....

they had a lead in net that traveled from just off shore for some hundred meters out to a area know as the holding net "also know as the box trap", here the fish would follow the net around till they where trapped in a area that would be lifted out and hauled on board a boat.....

but all along the net leading into the box section that held the fish was littered with dead fish trying to escape they would get stuck in the net and die, this part of the net was never pulled up so what a waste of fish, if you were down wind of these box nets you would just about vomit due to the stink of dead fish......

i did a couple of dives in them and cut bloody big holes in them to release the fish, but they soon got patched up......

they where targeting the kingfish population but anything that swam there way got caught im afraid to say........

Cheers Lethal
