I heard someone at the beach and boat comment that last year they witnessed two boats side by side by side similatneously hit a sand bar and both outboards flew up at full revs.
Was wondering about this as my old yammie 40, no tilt or trim would lift up but my new one has the tilt ram conected to both parts of the outboard, is there a shear pin or something, does it destroy the ram or pull it out.

My Johnson 115 has some way of lifting up if it hits something while underway, I can't remember how it works off hand, but I would think all outboards would have this feature. Shouldn't need to shear a pin or do any other damage to the outboard...

There is a pressure release mechanism which is essentially a spring loaded ball bearing in the hydraulic system. If you hit an object at speed,  reverse pressure overcomes the spring pressure diverting fluid back into the resevoir via a bypass. The motor should jump out of the way and save the ram. What happens to the skeg is a different matter !

Thanks Rockhopper, couldnt beleive how many read this post without a reply, could find no mention of it in the manual. Yes the force required to overcome momentum and the driving thrust and release the hydraulic pressure would indeed cause the skeg some greif if it hit anything substantial.

Good to know.how it all works.... guess avoiding hitting anything at full revs is probably the best way to ensure it's not tested....Wink

had a scenario where i was motoring along when i saw a hidden net as i quickly wacked the motor in to neutral the motor went fying up as if i was tilting motor realy fast.  the pressure from me slowing down tilted the motor up didnt hit any net or anything at that moment
