Does anyone out there service their own reels?
I'm not talking about taking them into a million pieces, (that's a nightmare waiting to happen...) but basic lubrication??

If so, the NZ Fishing News team have been doing a bit of work with Deuthlon, an international company that specialises in lubricants (originally for bikes, but now fishing reels). We're giving away a number of starter kits and would be keen to get some feedback if any keen forum members would be interested.

I used to be very keen on servicing my own gear, a take them to a million pieces sort of guy. Now I tend to deal with them when they sound like coffee machines. It's all because I spend too much time doing 'stuff' instead of looking after stuff. Plus I have too much fishing gear.

I strip mine down completely. 
Might be keen on purchasing some of the oil and the light grease.

Excellent idea, most of the greases required come in the size of pack that would last the average fisher several lifetimes.  A set containing a small amount of everything you need is ideal.  One of those ideas that you wonder why no one did it before.

I service most of my reels and bought a tub of Cals Reel Grease many years ago and there's still 90% remaining!!

The Deuthlon starter kits are currently being sent, so once they arrive, we'd appreciate any feedback (good or bad) and pictures.

As an FYI, there is a guide on servicing baitcaster reels being published in the September issue of NZ Fishing News to compliment the spin and overhead guides. This will be posted online in a month or so.

I service approx 50 game reels a year plus plenty of smaller jig reels and even smelly bait fishermans reels. Wouldnt mind trying it out

I generally just give them a good clean up with CRC by taking the reel/handle etc off but not fully disassemble them. One of my little Shimano TRG200 reels is still going after 14 years with this method, although the drag needs coaxing to get going now.

I'd give this stuff a go to see if I can bring that favourite reel back to its full potential though

I'm not a reel "mechanic" but I wouldn't use CRC. It's just a kerosene based product and not really good for anything.

Inox is very good. WD40 is better than CRC but not as good as Inox. Of course this is only my opinion, but I would recommend not suing CRC
