Out from Stanmore bay this morning, across to Motuora. Took a couple of hours for the fish to come on but when they did the micro jigs worked well.

We were getting a mixture of snaps and grunters on the jigs. Landed a nice size gurnard for the gulf just over the 400mm and ended up with 6 of each.

Just filleted all the gurnards and no white filets

That's s nice healthy fish. Strange how they have come back in such big numbers after all but disappearing not so long ago

Yeah I thought they liked the cold water but as we know gulf is warming. Has the bottom got muddier or has the snapper numbers dropped giving the gurnard a better chance.

These fish were out at the 30 metre mark in the middle of the bay. We were fishing orange kaveman tungsten jigs. Drifting really slow dragging the jigs and feeling the very little bites, then slowly lifting the jig and bang they were on.

Anything pink , about 2" long ( No , not that !) and heavy enough  not to bounce   dragged slowly along the bottom  works . I use a silver hex ,2' , and  pink with black tiger stripes on one side . I have also found they tend to bunch up in groups and once your on to them  , get quite a few in no  time .

I wish I was young again .... Id be heaps smarter than this time

Sadly possibly less competition for food, but back in the 60's there were plenty of snapper & gurnard I believe. Orange kaburas work so well out west, even virtually stationary ones

Agree, without the benefit of diving my belief is that gurnard cruise around in small schools of maybe 4 or 5. Just a totasl guess though although I have heard spearos say similar things

Yeah agree with that smudge when I lived out west and regularly fished the Kaipara anchored they would come through in small schools of 4 or 5 at a time.
