Never mind the low level sports on Sky this weekend (Bokkies will beat a determined Wales by 3 pts, Aussies will cream the bravehearts by 20 and the AB's will finally reveal their class with a 30 pt victory leaving squished tadpoles littering the park). The real sporting event of the weekend that everyone is talking about is the Counties vs Clevedon Interclub Challenge.

Team Smudge: me, Skoti and Phil (Arron sitting it out with a bruised ego after a skunking last weekend) have been tasked with gurnard and trevally. We are really going to fish for snapper and JD's but if Craysee finds out I'm in all sorts of trouble.

So yeah, this isn't a fishing report just yet, but this is part 1. If we don't win then it's Skoti's fault. Or Arron's for not making the cut. If we don't win then either Clevedon have cheated or this Lion Brown is stronger than the 4% stated on the can.

Wish us luck!

It's 1.00am and the boat IS ready, Skoti is probably still drinking rum and hanging out with Syd Barret in a parallel universe somewhere together & grooving with a pict. Meanwhile Phil is probably fast asleep and dreaming of monster gurnard. I think I'll make some toast and then grab some sleep. Skoti, should we txt Bob?

It is very dark outside ad the wind is every bit the 15 knots forecast by Metvuw. I'm rather tired but am comfortable in the knowledge that in only a matter of hours from now we'll be basking in a golden gurnard glory tinged with trevally triumph. Although I haven't heard from Ritchie or Dan, I wouldn't be surprised if they have put a pound or two on Counties winning this thing.

If you guys go down in a heap ( cuddles) we'll have justification to suspect Chris & Lou.

There is a report coming soon ......

In the meantime Counties police are looking for this man .
Described as caucasian in his mid 50's , of medium ( beer bellyed ) build .
Recent multipule hair transplants have rendered the suspect " a bit gay "
Goes by the names , Michael , Mike , Smudge , hey mate , bro and cuzz .
The perp has connections in the wider Franklin district and has been known to frequent the Kentish hotel as well as the Green Shed .
Police have absolutely no idea what he may or may not have done , but are willing to make ludicrous assumptions based on some of his dodgy associates behaviour .

I hope they get that guy Skoti, he looks mean. Wekafins, full credit, even though you failed and let down your club, at least you tried your best on a day where most were pussies on the fishing and stayed home with mum and a nice cup of cocoa. Obviously though there just wasn't enough mongrel on your boat to dig deep enough to take
out the kingfish category. We gave you one job, if Clevedon beat us it all falls on your shoulders!

Meanwhile on board our boat the team worked together to achieve a solid result in the gurnard and trevally sections.

First to step up to the plate and try harder than Wekafins was prepared to was Phil with this excellent specimen

It wasn't long before he was onto another monster, here he calls for me to back up on a huge fish

After a seemingly endless battle Phil wins the tussle with this Manukau leviathon using an advanced straylining method that we aren't prepared to share. I'd like to see the Whitianga commercial boys adopting a similar strategy

Meanwhile I was just hauling them in, an endless succession of plump croaking carrots

Although Phil and I were doing it in style - especially me, Skoti was doing a Wekafins impersonation until after a few harsh words he too started to fill the bin

Skoti put in a pretty decent second half to redeem himself with a remarkably similar looking fish. It takes a special kind of fisherman to select only the best fish the sea has to offer. Legend.

It was hard to leave such intense fishing but we had another mission to fulfill - we needed some trevally. Despite Clevedon paying off Dan the weatherman to bring on cyclonic conditions we chugged across to the far side of the Papakura channel. Although they didn't say a word, I could see the respect in my crew's eyes as I negotiated huge seas in our quest for perfection.

Anyway, I'm not one to brag but we nailed it, the only species coming onboard were gurnard, trevally and kahawai. Huge enormous ones.

With 14 gurnard on board and three over the magic kilo we were happy that we, unlike some others on this forum, had laid it on the line for our club. Full credit to us, Clevedon are going to have to pull something special out of the bag to take home the shield.

Despite my generous offer to include the team in our glory shot, they bowed to my superiority and insisted I take centre stage. A quick freshen up and an official weigh in and we were ready

I hope the team from the other significant sporting event on this weekend take a leaf from our book. Go hard Ritchie, follow our lead and slay them!

Ladies and genitalblokes , your attention please .
Here is the end result of what could possibly be described as the biggest comp since the RWC2015 .
Up for grabs was this fine hunk of polished wood .

Counties sport fishing club took on Clevedon sport fishing club in a head to head challenge .
Catergories were snapper , kahawai , kingfish , trevally , gurnard and john dory , with 3 points awarded to first , 2 to second , 1 to 3rd over the five species .
The following results speak for themselves .

Allthough Counties failed to weigh in a kingie , the 1st place rankings in the snapper , kahawai , john dory , trevally and a trifecta in the gurnard were enough to tip the scales favorably , the sucker punch coming from Phil who managed to land an enormous trev that measured 28 CMs LOL

Team Smudge scored 9 points for the top 3 gurnard and Phil's trev .
3 points to Mitch ( Craysee jnr ) for a beut 3.something Johnny Clap

Pat took out top honours and 3 points for Counties with his 15lb snap .

Smudge aka Mr Blondini with his 1.13 kg carrot , another 3 points .

And here is the winning clubs group photo .

A big thanks to The Clevedon squad for hosting us and to Bob ( Craysee ) for his organisation and leadership Clap

Cheers Boys..... gotta take it on the chin.... was a fail at tauranga

But there's always a story

1st mistake... leavin a rod in the holder going under the motorway bridge at sulfur point... that rod now needs a new tip

got told off for catching ( our only livie and only fish for the day) over by the marina, apparently its a restricted area, hey the birds on the water tell me were to fish, i dont want to hear about your rulesLOL

went out wideish lost a few rat kings on the poppers and jigs, turned our livie into a cray pot... came in close to matakana caught zilch the wind blew it sucked.

headed back to sulpur point drove the boat on to the trailer ( because my electric winch wasnt wired up to the truck i was using), bang the engine stalled, ohh dear there's a large lump of sea lettuce around the prop, and chicken wire WTF... ok use the hand winch, snnnnappp went the wire rope.

anyways got the boat on the trailer, got back to where we were staying only to find the VHF antenna had fallen off, and a wire was hanging were it use to be...

Im having a great day now...

anways Counties won the interclub comp, we had a awesome BBQ and a beer at the clevedon hotel on a quiet sunday arvo..

Thanks Clevedon you were great hosts

got a go ... im fixing my prop, ariel, and winch

Cheers

haha, us ones here in Tauranga like to protect that which is ours.
Bet you won't want to return for a while sinkafeWLOL

When you got told off for fishing under the birds, was that outside the marina?
I've never heard about a restricted area except inside the marina  itself.

No mention of the  jellyfish~~did they ignore you?

couple weeks back ( when i got my wifes truck stuck on papamoa beachEmbarrassed ) the jellies were thick and big... jelly snot, horrible things, apparenty there just as thick off  the mercs as well... but they kept out of my way a little in the weekend

Yip havent had the best luck out of tauranga yetLOL

Great team effort guys.
9 points of our 20 produced by the vessel smudge.
Can't ask for much more than that, give a man a job and delivers.

Thanks for your efforts too Wefakins and dunwurkn.

Having to work Saturday I had to n put all my eggs in one basket and go JD hunting sunday.
An early start saw us parked in the mussel farm catching Livies and watching the rugby on the big screen.

It was so exciting fishing took a back seat until after the game.

With just a few snapper in the bin I was starting to worry I wouldn't meet my obligation of a dory to add to the clubs catch.
And then Mitchell caught a beauty. 3.29kg I think from memory.

With little further action. I knew of a spot where the beer is cold and company good so we headed to the clevedon hotel.

With excellent hosts and a great feed it was a good way to spend sunday afternoon.

Thanks counties team members for your efforts and thanks clevedon for hosting us.

Yeah it was a lot of fun, thanks for pushing it along Craysee. I had so much on my plate but I'm easily led and in the end I didn't do a whole lot of stuff and went fishing instead, It was really hard to left a reasonably good gurnard bite to go catch trevally. With only one barely legal fish I didn't think we had done enough but we sure did.

The fish that impressed me was Bob's boy Mitchell who caught the big as John dory. A great team effort, it's what clubs should be all about.

Maybe it's about time we had a few Fishing.net challenges?
