Seeing as we can't get out for a fish I thought I'd start a game we can all play . A fishing comp of sorts . Seeing as we have about 24 more days of lockdown , that is going to be the number we work with .
What you need to do : 1. Gather 24 pictures of you with a fish you have caught and copy them into a new folder . In no paticular order , rename them from 1-24 2. At midday each day I will call a random number and everyone is to post their corresponding fish photo . 3. Competitors can then vote for fish of the day by thanking the post/one vote per day only . 4.All pics must be up before midnight on the day .
For those who may
not have 24 pics of themselves, a pic you have taken of someone else is
fine and also you don't have to enter everyday . Winner gets bragging rights for the day

Haha i don't have 24 pictures! Too busy catching to take a photo. Just ask the wife, everytime she catches one bigger than me it goes back really fast so she can't get bragging rights.

Many of us will already have some pics uploaded.. or have heap of other subject pics uploaded The list to go thru can get rather tedious IF we can not sort / delete obsolete pics later..
Putting aside that.. If dont have 24 pics, have say 6 number anyway , a random number between 1 and 24. When that number is drawn, enter it..

Ok just going to add a few more rules . All pics must be up before midnight on the day . For those who may not have 24 pics of themselves, a pic you have taken of someone else is fine and also you don't have to enter everyday . If you already have the pic uploaded to the site that you wish to enter , simply give it a number from 1-24 and reuse the original file you uploaded . Remember , this is for fun so you don't need to bribe the weighmaster with rum ( but I will still accept bribes )

I tried to choose pictures that were interesting, different or had a bit of story. Who just wants to see pictures of all the monsters I've caught
It so happens that #7 is the smallest fish in my collection! A pacific/blue/slimy mackerel. I know most of you would consider this bait, but we really like eating them. This one was caught on a microjig in early summer. The shoals move fast, so it's often hard to catch up with them. They are not hard to hook if you find them, but they are hard to keep on the hook. It's a shame that the purse seiners devastate the shoals in Bream Bay.

#7... background story behind it. Whipped up to Tuts after a god awful week at university (so normal week at uni in 2015, April was the month)
I remember this one specifically because the fish tried to drown me because I shot it in a cave. (always have a float so you can let go of the speargun was the lesson learnt from this fish)
Not a huge fish but for mid April out of Tuts in the shallows was in great condition for length and had awesome colours.

Muppet - I am envious. I think you wrote about this previously. I keep thinking there must be more around - but I am lucky to catch 1 per yr. Not quite sure I get the plan and folder bit, and have few pics of me with fish - mainly fishing solo. But I like the stories with the pics. Doesn't have to be the size of the fish to be the most memorable. Can I add one - that has a good story - not my fish. Alan

tried that -lots. Anyway - I have sorted a handful of pics - not many with me. Fishing solo mostly - bit hard to take pic too. But picked ones with a story. Just have to wait for the numbers to come up. Pleased with myself. Computer and I don't get on too well - not first name terms anyway. I have many names for it. Do we vote on y/days pics today? Alan

I happen to have a #17 - I didn't number mine starting at 1. Only got 5 or 6.So this pic is here because of the story. Fish took a skirt, and 30 mins or so later I am about to trace it - no trace. Just a tail to grab. Trying to figure WTF is going on - I see the swivel clip jammed in its tail - the clasp bit. Total freak. I think it was bill wrapped, then with the line tension the swivel clip must have pinged open with the tail/body thrashing, straightened, slipped the trace then on the way out the clasp bit jammed in the front edge of the tail. DoA. Only one we have brought back. Remind me how we vote. Thx Alan

I dont have a #17 so here goes something that I will always cherish.
Basically this is more than likely the last 20lb snapper my father is likely to spear, as he no longer jumps in just stays on the boat. (it went 23lb but we will get to this later on)
The morning cracked off like so, packed the boat up the night before, did the pre-dawn drive from Whangarei to the bay of islands and was on the water at 6am.
Now generally fish frames / left over scallop shells / cray bodies get used as berley.. Me being me accidentally grabbed the wrong container of stuff for a berley.. so with it defrosting over night.. there was 2 packets of squid, a few pillies and then atleast half a doz KY fillets.. in the bin, to my surprise when opening the lid on the water getting ready to chuck it overboard in a gut that tends to produce well for big snapper here and there.. thought oh well, its going over now.
Yep I grabbed mums bait bin
The gut is about 20m long and has a width of around 1.5-2m depending on where you are. goes from 8m at the bottom to 15m (an idea of the angle it runs) and you can sit and peer over it in 4m of water.
I took the deeper end and Dad took the shallower end, as he was approaching the gut to peer over all he saw was the face of this fella. Boomfa, Dads shaft didnt even manage to leave the barrel of the gun and he essentially kebabed it.
When the fish got mounted the guy who does the mounts up here was fascinated that this greedy little 68cm snapper had 2 whole KY fillets in its guts and a few squid! Fancy that guys!

That is one fat snapper!
Heres one I caught quite a few moons ago while fishing out behind kawau at flat rock in my mates irb. Remember the day well as it was one of my first big snapper caught on an orange inuchku jig and a curado 200g7.

Hi All, just been reading thread, I'll have a crack. Firstly being stuck at home during lock down with super flat seas is excruciating . When I first took up boat fishing in 2008 it took me two years to finally catch a 30 lb plus Snap. Caught a few more since but always remember this one more so. Caught well before i joined the Forum and before the introduction of measure mats. It was an ugly old fish, decided on not mounting, but remember it as a long bugger! Would of been good to known its length but wasn't important back then.

I have a #15 - my numbers started there and randomly forward - figuring people may run out of stuff to post around #24. This fish pic is not the greatest - but does have a story. Caught this guy just before Xmas - in the area that 30 yrs ago was the go - to for puka. You just needed a rod, some bait and wait. Good sized puka. Long gone now. Wiped out. If I get 1 per yr, doing well. Was very surprised when I pulled this guy up (around 12 kg I think) - I was stuck on the bottom for a while - light gear - fishing for terries. I had about a 20lb trace and caught it on a 2/0 hook, so couldn't put too much pressure on. My mate on the boat fishes here as much and as long as me. He tried all summer for one - no luck. Not many days you come back with more than expected. Alan

I am one of the organisers of a gurnard only fishing competition - The Grunter Hunter. It's quite popular with a few forum members. With $3000 1st prize I make sure I get plenty of practice in before the event. I caught this fish a week or two before last years comp. From memory it was around 1.3kg. Buggered if I can get a fish that size on the day of the competition though

MB- I was up there a few weeks ago. Very cool catching the browns off the edges. Did you know - long time ago, DoC tried to wipe the browns out of the lake. Trapping them. Fortunately, things have changed.I have a #22 - did try posting it - doesn't seem to have turned up Hopefully doesn't twice. This is the first FFish we caught on a lure. Was trying for mahi or skippy. Given the tiny size of their mouth I am surprised it managed to take the lure. Then a few minutes later - a repeat on same lure. Primo live bait. We now catch them on flies.

I blame the photographer ( he's the one about to get punched by me in Smudges pic above ) I'd only had a few hours game fishing experiance prior to landing my first marlin on Smudges boat during a comp 9 years ago . My first snapper caught on a hard body lure. I was sceptical at first, but now I catch them consistently with this technique in the summer months. Makes a nice change from jigging and soft baiting.

Fishing the Grunter Hunter comp in 2018 dad and I weren't catching a hell of alot of gurnard . We had maybe six in the bin with one that I thought could be in the running ( took out 5th place ) We decided to have a quick snapper fish at our spot seeing as the tide was at it's best for this area . Nolonger than an hour there before heading back for the weigh-in we told each other . I also had a personal reason for wanting to have a snapper fish , the end of the clubs season was a couple of weeks away and I wanted to knock my mate Keith off the top spot with his 4.5 kg harbor snapper . Luckily in our bait collection we had a few bullet tuna , my favorite bait for big snapper . First bait down and I had a good hit and landed a snapper about 3.5kg , not big enough to beat Keith though . Dad gets a whole bullet tuna and threads it on his hook and asks me " how does this look ? " " A bit half assed " I replied " Hmmppff , I'll show ya something " he said as he dropped his line over . The bait hadn't been on the bottom long when his rod took on a serious bend with line rapidly departing the TLD15 . I immediatly brought my line in , grabbed the net and watched as dad fought the fish for a while before it popped up beside the boat . Holy **** , that's a 20lber if ever I saw one . A couple of pictures and some congratulations later I put a big bait on hoping for something similar while dad just sat there smiling and trying to not have a heart attack It didn't take long before a big weight loaded up on my rod and I was into a good fish . Dad had by this time recovered enough to net my fish , not as big as his , but a beut just the same . And this is how it came to be that a father and son turn up at a gurnard only fishing comp to weigh a 20.5 and 17lb snappers .

Cast and retrieve or a slow troll? I'm considering trying them at anchor when the current is honking along.

Slow troll. Jetski is in idle which is about 4km/h. I'd prefer slower, but that is as slow as I can get without resorting to towing buckets or other such nonsense. The engine is pretty quiet, but an electric motor would be better.

Some really cool stuff today. I was fishing beside Skoti and his dad when they buggered off to go snapper fishing. During a gurnard comp. I just shook my head. An hour or so later they turn up with these two huge snapper. I just shook my head again. Stunning fish from a harbour renown for holding small snapper. Stunnig stuff Skoti.
What about Demon's boy? Getting a record kingy??? Wow.
Then there's that thing that fell from space onto Alan's hook. Weird!
This is a great thing Skoti

I have never had much luck with Trevally on the Muddy but for some reason in August 2015 I just couldn't miss. I have been back to the same spot time and time again and never managed to bag another Trevally there since... weird!

MB gets it. It is a prehistoric sort of beast - dates back to the dinosaurs basically.
Its ugly side is the mouth. Literally 3 fangs. From memory 2 down one up. Ugly as. Caught a handful in deep water. Managed to let the rest go and they seem to survive. That coloured flap thing is the bladder bag. Regards Alan

Today's offering is Sean's fish. Sean is a friend from work. He loves eating fish, somewhat enjoys fishing, but golf is more his thing. I took him out for a meat hunt. We went straight to spot X and loaded up the chilly bin. He couldn't believe it!

Just another Snapper, not sure when or where but it's on a Candy Apple Inchiku jig - probably 60g which I use out west in up to 60m or so. The Catchy Squid Wings and Boss jigs work well too. A great option in spring time.

Do not adjust your settings or check your connection .
This rather blurry picture came from a rather blurry trip to Kawhia . Back in the day when Smudge was a credible fishing influencer and writer for NZ Fishing World magazine he was tasked to do a story on a West coast charter operation named Crazy Horse ( also a member here going by the same handle ) and naturaly he invited me along . Later I was to learn I was about 10th on the list , the other nine not able to make it , yay me
Story here http://www.fishing.net.nz/forum/kawhia-kaos-on-crazy-horse_topic96207.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.fishing.net.nz/forum/kawhia-kaos-on-crazy-horse_topic96207.html
Anyhoo , I managed to land this snapper that , although weighed on unofficial scales was a new personal best for me .
