24.5kg........so close but so far!(WR 25.2kg) on 10kg tippet last thursday. team effort, thanks to skipper Clyde Fraser of Bravehart, Marcus mate and cameraman, Nikolij Mathiesen teaser and gaff man.......

12wt rod, tibor gulf stream obvioulsy! 20 min fight, home made fly, barbless!

Been away for a few days of both fresh and salt with some clients and we managed some great fish, but nothing even remotely in the same league of that one!

You're right Matt, the Kingies have arrived! There were good numbers right in the harbor a fortnight ago and then it all went quiet... now they are back.
Had a big ******* busting fish on the surface near us a couple of days ago at Yellow Point but the guy I had fishing just wasn't up to it.... It's a bit crappy here this morning but is meant to clear... might have to take "Outlaw" out there myself this arvo for a look see.

That is such a great capture Ian and to knock it over in 20 is a testament to the angler and the gear.

Ian, apart from the skill to get it hooked, remain attached, and then get it boated so quick, that's also a huge compliment to your rig preparation & knots I'm sure - I'd be very interested in reading details about the whole rig - especially the knots and 10kg leader material that survived that little 24.5kg test

William you make a very good point...
I was just driving home from fishing... landed a few Kahawai and lost a small Kingie (8 kg's maybe)....
I was thinking on the drive... I know how I like to rig and it seldom lets me down (Morsie Disciple) but I wonder how Ian rigs..... "Can't be much bloody wrong with it" was the first thought that went through my scone....
And the IGFA record would be nice and I bet there is some disappointment, but it wouldn't matter a squidjion to me... I'd be dancing the happy dance from now till New year!
Record or not the capture is a magnificent one and something every saltwater fly angler would be royally proud of.
We've got all summer to try and top it guys.... but it will be a bloody tough call....

re rigging.....screeds have been written on the topic that I am sure most have glanced at. Much of it is full of fancy stuff with complicated impracticalities. I dont take out pretied leaders usually, like to keep things simple and little plastic bags drive me nuts! (though are sensible and practical definetly!). before this trip I ran some tests at home, nothing too complicated. put a hook in the vice, tie leader to it, other end in good scales and pull. I got some nasty surprises but ended up with something I trust. My leader was 10kg maxima spider hitch on each end (fantastic knot, fast and easy and strong), one of these gets looped to the flyline loop, the other is tied to suffix 60lb flourocarbon with an albright. then fly tied on with a uniknot, occasionally a Rapala/lefty loop knot. lick it all, snugg it all. then tested these in vice and would break in the single section at about 8.5-9kg.
one thing we discovered with this fish...a while back I posted about Boga-grips, I bought a Rapala type for $99, goes to 27kg, solid SS construction. its jaws open up and in rather than out on the boga......try getting a massive fat kingy lip in and it staying there when lifted!(we gaffed it anyway but were trying to weigh it at sea before the official weigh) ok on 15kg fish but not on big kings. Might be better on fish with thinnner lips/jaws but if you want to buy a lipper for big fish I think a boga is the way but the price is horrendous! however US$ is low to the kiwi now......ebay....
