Hi All Have just got back from a few days in the Bay Of Islands. Spent Thursday out on my boat with Craig and had a blast. Caught a few fish. Lost some gear to The toothy ones but all in all was a excelent day. Thanks to Craig for his company it was most appreciated. Here is a fish my wife caught on a jig. The Kingi's we caught on fly were a bit smallers.  Wind got up a bit and the sea got a bit rough but the boat handled the conditions. Also caught some toothy ones on fly as well as some nice kaiwai. Realy nice to meet you Craig. |

Good to meet you both Garth and thanks again for the trip out. Loved the boat, despite the sea and wind conditions. Did get some serious sunburn on my shins though. Totally forgot that sitting in the seat forward of the centre console with legs extended forward meant that the lower half of my legs would cop it. Had bright red chicken legs there for a couple of days  .
You'll be pleased to know that I got out there in another boat two days later only to find the kings very quiet at the Bird and virtually no work-ups at Waiwiri! We did find albacore but then the boat broke down and we needed a tow home! Given the conditions I think you were fairly lucky with the fishing.
Did you get to Parengarenga??

No we didnt. Went out on friday and caught some nice kings at bird rock. Got right in the middle of a huge king workup and got a few of the samller ones. Had a cuta jump about a metre out the water after my jig. Did some snapper fishing at the nine pin and got about 30 snapper only took a few home. Biggest about 2 to 3 Kg. Had a great time. Back in auckland now. |

Amazing the difference a day can make. Saturday was dead!
Just got back from Houhora. Not much happening there either. Water cold and green inshore. A few rat kings about but virtually no kahawai. Josh found some nice trevs but I was sand boarding with his little brother at the time.
My fly total for the two days was one blue maomao!
Pleased to hear you found more fish.

Good stuff guy's you are not the only place struggilng to catch quality (mind you any fish is quality), things in the Bay Of Plenty are remarkably quiet on the Kingy front, however water temp and bait prospects are improving daily, I think although we have had a slow start to the season something special is about to happen, last year the bait was few and far between in the Bay, this year there is truckloads so it's only a matter of time good luck everyone in pursuit of that majic fish. ------------- Fish don't make mistakes |
