I have been playing around with the SP's for about a year now and have had a few favourites which have changed with experience. I started off with the Nuky Chickens, but dont seem to use these as much now. I now favour slug go 6" and the 3" Atomic jerk shads. I realise there are different lures for different situations. But would like to know your opinions on what you think is the best all round SP lure available in NZ..

its interesting how 6 months ago it was all nuclear this, chicken that..
was down at pure fishing in albany the other day and malcolm was saying how they dont even bother unpacking the chickens when they arrive now, they just go straight out the door.
trust me this place was a sp fisho's dream !

these would have to be my favourite for snapper:
Lunkercity 6" Slug-Go - Arkansas Shiner / Alfwife

Lunkercity 5" Fin-S - Arkansas Shiner / Moss Shad

When fishing side by side with 'Nuke Chook'
fishos they seem to need to change their tails due to damage at least 3x more often
than I do and certainly don't seem to catch anymore or larger fish....
Have also just been given a bunch of Squidgy Flick Baits in different
sizes to try
out.....they certainly look the bees knees and again are constructed
from a much more durable product than whatever it is that "Nuke Chooks"
are made from....

also on average there are many more baits in the packs of Lunkercity,
Squidgy, Atomics and the like
for often cheaper counter prices than the 'Chooks" and their
siblings?...the math doesn't work in the favour of GULP in my
opinion....(no
offence intended to the sponsors of this forum, just stating my
opinions and obseravtions)....but Berkley Power Baits are an altogther
more robust product and have had good fishing with them.
The Atomic Baits I have used in the past have been really good on the
'fish per unit' scale of things as have the Storm Wildeye 5" Split Tail
Minnows and 4" Finesse Minnows.

5" Chartruse Jerk Shad
5" Saphire Shine Jerk Shad
5" Nuclear Chicken Jerk Shad
Seem to work best for me...
Does anyone here have much luck using the Pogy's? I have fished them a
few times but they haven't generated anywhere near the interest as what
I have when using the jerk shad shape.

The action is awesome mate...we had a couple of Aussie SP nuts out with
us filming a show recently and they used the flickbaits to really good
effect on snapper, kings and "aussie sambos"....they used them in
conjunction with jigheads till i showed them how i prefer to "texas
rig" with worm hooks.....I think they are now sold... .....they've got the pavalova, crowded house, pahlap and now rigging their soft baits with wormies!...lol
Can't say I've seen them in the shops either, but I'm sure one of the
TAS sufferers and tackle shop loiterers will be able to answer that
question....

Hi!!! i am new to the forum..really enjoy the reports and am addicted to sp fishing...Have been fishing artificial baits for a while and find that sometimes i rekon its not just what colour you use but the technique.I have often been outfished by someone using the same bait and improved my catch rate with adjusting my technique .Like lure fishing ..some guys seem to have favourites and confidence in certain colours.I think its patern (size ,shape) and action of bait..altough have yet to catch on chartruse anything in Nz(could be my confidence in the colour here)but in central america they say if it aint chartruse it aint no use!!!and when i have fished there i have found this to be true!!

Hey Kezza when you rig the lure with a worm hook and a ball sinker, do you fix the ball sinker in position some how so it does not slide up your line on the drop?

Hi ya Mahiman.......I haven't found the need to as yet but in saying
that if we are drifting in anything over 40ms and/or we have a bit of
speed on requiring the use of lead over 2oz I opt for a weightier
jighead.....but I'm sure a tooth-pick lodged down the side on the
sinker hole would work just as well....may just give it a go next time.

The most consistent in last 2 weeks have been - Gulp Sardine Brown, Atomic 3' jerk shad. Have hooked some really good fish on nuc chickens but lost them. Agree that tail nibbling is a problem with chickens.
Look forward to trying worm hooks (will meet u soon kezza) once Iuse up stock of jig heads. fIND EVERY 5-6 fish hook on jig head stuffed- point bitten off.

Still having most success with the Nuclear chickens followed by the Blue glitter. Been using the Lime Tigers with no results so far. Picking up the odd fish on the crabs in all patterns and on the worms which I cut down to a smaller size.
Having the least success of the Foodsource grubs and the Atomic range.
Still to try the Slugos and another couple of brands I have in the stash.
Favourite jigheads at the moment are the TT Lure range. Using the Gamakatsu and Mustad worm hooks with no preference over either at this stage.
Wouldn't have a clue which is the BEST lure. No doubt there will be more brands to come in the near future too.

5" strike king jerk shads, in my opinion the softest and most durable SP's you can get, and they work well to.
The one in this snaps mouth had already caught about 7 fish of similar size before this photo was taken.
And the bait sill looks good as new.
4"Bass assains are another favourite, not as durable as strike kings but at 20cents per bait I'm not complaining.
they work to.

Redfinger, what hooks are these that are breaking off? PM me and I will send you a couple of my jigheads to try, I can't imagine the points getting bitten off.
Josh, I have used the Strike King XXX as well and found them very durable. I have a lot of senko style worms and found they last for ages. I cut them in half and have a better hookup rate on blue cod I reckon because the jure does not extend out past the hook too far. Often I will use the same softbait for a whole session. Of course cutting them in half they last twice as long!
I have used the Atomic 3" jerkminnows and found them pretty good esp. on kahawai.

All of the ones I like are not being widely stocked anymore. Was a great fan of Tsunami Pro 2" rainbow trout, I really liked the patterns and action of the Tsunami pro plastics. Mainly used them on KY and trout. Have not seen them for many months. Their price was also nice.
Now I mainly use Storm, although been trying out a few gulps and Slug-gos.

VMC worm hooks with 6" Slug-go in Arkansas shiner and 5" fin-s in
Alewife, they last longer and I've up to six decent ( 2 to 5 kilo )
fish before they are destroyed, they slide up the hook away from teeths
harm when hooked in to a fish.
I find the smaller ( 3" ) shads especially any thing blue work very
well but seem to get more smaller fish and soon loose the tail, often
loosing it before they get a fish. It seems to be nibble nibble on the
drift then nothing - the tail's been bitten off.

Was in Kmart today in Porirua and noticed they are carrying a range of softies called YUM made by a crowd called Live Prey Technology from the States. Nothing great about the price at $10.95 a pkt although the 6inch Ribbontail (which is a worm) and the Samurai Shad look to have about 15 in the bag. Anyone tried this brand at all? Stuck my nose in the bag and they don't appear scented but look like they have salt crystals all over them

These are the suckers......

Squidgy Flick Baits
These
may well be the most exciting new plastics
to hit the Aussie market in years! A soft
stick bait with a difference; Flick Baits
rely largely on rod manipulation from the
angler to impart their deadly, dying baitfish
action. Fish them on relatively light jig
heads, our new Finesse Resin Heads, or even
un-weighted, give that rod tip a short, sharp
flick or two, then let your Flick Bait glide
and stall like a dying baitfish and
watch the predators pounce!
These things are
almost TOO good

Forget about brand names and look at softbaits as profiles, sluggos, jerkshads, flickbiats are all stick baits, No in built action and require AIA (angler induced action) to shake their wobbly bits. Shads, pogys, and paddle tails all have inbuilt tail actions that are created thru hydrodynamics. Saltwater fly fishermen usually relate to this very easily. Baits like stick baits have slender profiles that get down quick with a minimal amount of weight, which is always benificial. Shads and pogys usually require a little more weight and time to get them down to where you want them. These types of baits work extremly well in discoloured water as the produce a lot more vibration than stick baits. As far as rigging them is concerned, Texas rigging is a not the most effecient way to rig a soft bait. It creates a belly in the line reducing the feedback to the angler and also reduces hook ups by slowing down hooksetting speeds by the rod having to pull the belly out of the line first. Most baits will have a better action and relay more information back to the angler when they are weighted on the front of the bait. The only time you would consider a rig like this is if you were trying to extract fish from heavy cover, even in that situation you would use an all terrain jighead that is basically a worm hook with weight built onto the front of it. These are available from many differant manufactures. Like I said Soft bait fishing is very similar to fly fishing, choose a profile, deliver it, get the bight. Forget about brand names, all of these things catch fish and you will catch fish rigging on worm hooks, but its far from the most effeciant way of presenting a soft bait. If it was the best way every angler in the ABT and AFC would be using them and believe me they dont.

I am trying very hard to draw even a remote similarity between bass,
bream and flathead etc and fishing for XOS snapper and kingfish which
is what I'd say 99% of NZ softbait fishermen are targeting.....
We recently hosted the IFISH (Aussie fishing TV Show?) boys here in NZ
and they where all about the jigheads that was till I showed them how
effective the TEXAS rig was....
Albert-Wild.....believe me when I say the TEXAS rig works very very
well for the sort of fishing we are doing (as the SB hall of fame will
bare testamony too) and I'd be more than happy to have a fish-off with
you one day......you use your preference of rigs and GULP! Baits and I'll use the texas
rig and a selection of non Berkley kit....deep/shallow/casting/whatever.....maybe 2x teams of 2?

Kezza I have switched to the worm hooks and like it a lot. I find I can really fine tune the amount of lead needed to get to the bottom. Also the lure slides up the line and does not get chomped and therefore lasts longer. Have you seen the cone shaped lead sinkers they use in bass fishing. I used them in Florida they could work well with your texas rig.....
|

it'd be fun alright Moocha... ...
good on ya Mahiman...nice fish this morning mate!!...
I am constantly suprised at the number of icecream freezers
that have swapped from jigheads to worm hooks since being shown that
they 1) do work very well 2) increase longevity of the baits themselves
3) provide versatility and options 4) are cost effective....
even as recently as yesterday one of my learned collegues was
persevering with jigheads, true enough he was hooking fish at about the
same rate as the others on the boat that were using the TEXAS rig but
Daryl (name has been changed to protect his identity) was losing them
due to the "gay pink plucken line" breaking(?)...anyhoo...after he'd
run out of his 2oz jigheads at whatever they are worth per unit ? he
resorted to using a 1oz jighead with a 1oz ball sinker on
top....hahahahaha.....after a few drifts and no fish a slighty wary and
beaten man turns to me and says..."this thing looks just plain plucken
wrong no snapper in their right mind would chew on this....so Kez!?
where your worm hooks at bro and while I'm in here might just grab a
few of those LUNKERCITY FIN-S shads" and after that ol' Daryl
never looked back....I'm not sure if it was the rig but his fortunes
changed....TRUE STORY!
and yes I have indeed seen the Texas Sinkers and thought about getting
a few samples in to try out, but the supplier that I found only had 1oz
plus the cost of shipping lead around the globe made it a little
prohibitive....righteo....off to find a 1 & 2oz texas sinker mould!
stay tuned as i reckon they'd be the ducks danglies!

Kezza forgive me for being a real thicko but to me a ball sinker (trust that is what people are using) ontop of the sp just does not look right. Remember i have been using mainly the smaller sp's 3-5inch and the jig heads seem to present better.
Obviously u guys are getting the results and good on you.
Give me a situation say - 15m depth, 15 knots plus of wind - how much weight do u use?
Also how does the sp slide "up wards" upon hook up as I have heard a few people say?

Come along with us Russ - it's easier to soak it all up that way and
you'll see all manner of technique ( some good and some just atrocious
) and how and why.

Roll on the SP Burbon Bowl comp (or some other clever name to that effect).
Sharpie's & Wormies vs Berkley & Jiggy jig's heads .....sounds good for the Kiwis to smash the Roo's yet again

I guess it will be easier to show you on Wednesday the complete setup,
but my preference is an EGG style sinker.....ahhhh...just typed out a
bunch of stuff that was going no where quickly...so will attempt to
show you what works for me on Wednesday.
re: bait sliding up the shank?

this occurs more often than not on the bite.....

we were slaying rat kingies at the cape on the mackerel imitations
and i was glad i had an overhead/baitcast reel instead of a eggbeater, found the kingies heaps easier to control compared to my bro's sp set up

Have been having a lot of success lately on the gulp 3" pogys in the dark red colour rigged on a worm hook. Funny how I had never caught much on the pogys before. Tried one the other day for a change and it outfished all other SP's by a long way........they are more durable and cheaper than the jerk shads too.....
