Subject: Cortland Braid problems
Date Posted: 15 Jul 2008 at 5:27pm
Went to the 3 Kings recently in search of mega Bass and Kingfish. One of the guys in our group had just re spooled with brand new 37kg Cortland Black Spot braid. The fishing was great for eryone except him.Cry After experiencing several unexplained bust offs we tested his braid using portable scales. The testing was pretty crude, but the line was breaking at 12 to
14 KG. Even considering the crudeness of the test which was the best we could manage considering we were at sea, the braid was sadly lacking in performance. We since tested the reels drag which maxed out at 14kg.
I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem? Or maybe if you recently purcahased the same braid you might like to test it before using it on any serious fish.

Craig0, was the line tested straight off the reel or through the guides? Maybe also check the guides for any nicks, cracks, etc. if it was the latter?

Cortland black spot is 1 of the leading braids for puka fishing, the 37kg constantly breaks at 40 kgs + or -  2kg..i have experienced problems with it breaking when using rods with guides that arent suitable for braid..the tiagra game rods are 1 rod which doesnt like braid, also cheaper rods with roller tips have problems with the braid slipping down the between the roller and the tip..check the stripper guide for a tiny cut in the seat,or run off the braid down to new stuff on the bottom of the spool and check that with the scales.

Hi, Good point regarding the rod guides. I think that can be discounted however. After testing some of the line off the reel we then tested some line direct from the original spool (with the same result) which owner had taken with him in case extra braid was required.
I also thought that Cortland braid was a top brand.Confused

CORTLAND IS A GREAT BRAID TAKE IT BACK TO THE RETAILER IAM SURE THEY WILL SORT IT OUT.

Yes that would seem to be the simple solution. A couple of points though.
The first thing my friend did was take the part spool of unused braid back to the retailer it wa purchased from. This is a large and well known retailer of boats and fishing tackle. They acknowledged the problem did exist and then contacted the importers, who I believe is Douglas Johnson. It would seem that they also accept that there is a problem and apart from offering a replacement spool of braid they also affered a free T shirtConfused

THis hardly seems to be much in the way of compensation for a ruined fishing trip. The trip alone cost the guy over $2000. Not to mention the addititional outlay on brand new gear in order to ensure that the trip was successful. A total outlay of something in the vicinity of $4000 for the trip.

I'd say a replacement spool of crap braid and a free T shirt is a bit of a slap in the face myself.

CraigO You can;t expect a retailer to meet the cost of a charter trip based on what you have said.
DJ have acknowledged that there was a problem, they really only have to replace the braid - not pay anything towards the cost of a charter. I've never been on a charter where there wasn't some other gear to use, and anyone going on such a major a charter with a single set of gear needs their head reading.
I hate to think what I spend on gear for such trips but twice the cost of the charter is not uncommon. And I always have spare braid and reels for the kings trips as fishing up there will put even the best of gear to the sword.

Posting such a demand on a public forum is a tad out of order mateOuch

Must agree with Benk, never had and issue with the 37kg cortland use on my Stella 10000 or 20000, found it would break around the same as the top PowerPro braids.

Would not take cortland on a big trip ,if you can afford the trip you can afford to get some top of the line braid and gear, not to say that you could cop a bad batch these things happen, take plenty of spear gear as boulder has mentioned.

Well I guess we all have our own expectations etc. To Boulder I will say that I was definitly not suggesting that the cost of the charter was an appropriate restitution, that was your assumption. No demand was made Boulder. What I did say was that a free T shirt and a replacement spool of braid was a very poor response. No apology, no gee wizz we better check the batch and see what other unlucky souls ended up with this crap braid, no if you ever want some shimano products then please contact us for a great price. To name just a few great PR suggestions.
The comments regarding cortland braid being a great product are meaningless. The world is full of great products from great companies who make a booboo and then have to fix their cockup. What makes a really great company is how they stand behind their product.
A little PR goes a long way.

I guess the person concerned could have taken extra gear. Maybe it would have been another complete identical set, or perhaps another full spool of braid (of the same brand of course because it such a great product). Either solution would of course been of little use.
The point is that if you invest in what is supposed to be quality gear then you should be able to expect reliable performance.

To Gimp. please read my post again, I said that it was tested on the boat. Quite crudely I admit, with weighing scales. the difference however between the result of 14kg and the ecpected breaking strain was so significant that it hardly warranted clarification. How the retailer tested the braid I cannot say. I doubt though that they would acknowledge a problem if they were not certain that there was one.

Mate your opening up a can of worms....DJs (shimano agent) stand behind thier products as good if not better than any other company..i had a high end reel break and they flew in parts to fix it and gave it the once over in thier service dept... they told me 4 weeks initially then had it back in 1 week..thats service mate ...real good service,if you think they should recall all the cortland braid and test it after 1 spool has been found by you to be faulty thats just stupid..take the replacement braid and be happy with that and the shirt...DJS are one of the good guys in the tackle industry and sell quality products not cheap crap that doesnt last

Well of2fish. one swallow does not a Summer make (or so the saying goes). I guess you got the warm fuzzies because they looked after you on that occassion.
I did not suggest that they start recalling braid, just that they should be concerned regarding the customers who have been unfortunate to purchase the same batch.
Also I certainly would not wear a T shirt which advertised the product of a company who has left a sour taste in my mouth.

Mate im the 1st person to be pissed off with bad service and voice my opinion on this site,AND IM ALSO ONE OF THE 1ST TO POST UP ON GOOD SERVICE..however you have bitten off more than you can chew with this braid subject..ive tested heaps of braids and tested cortland many times on the line tester.the same line tester that your bad batch of braid will be tested on if it hasnt already. Shure thier will always be a 1 off case of bad spools of braid, ive experienced this 2 times with the early braids we used for s/b fishing..the shop replaced the braid and i was happy...during the manufacturing process the braid is tested periodically to make shure it is up to the quality expected..You come across as if you are owed a free 80 wide or something..DJ,S owe you nothing but a replacement spool of braid, the t shirt was a bonus..believe me when i say your better to build a bridge now before you get your self into a pile of problems slagging products on a public forum

Well of2fish. I hope one day you purchase something from me and I sincerely hope that it turns to crap on you so that I can offer you a free T shirt with my advertising plastered all over it. At the same time I will tell you that you should indeed be gratefull that you now have the privilege of wearing said T shirt. You will also not get any apology from me that the product turned to crap, because according you that is also not necessary

Bitten off more than I can chew. I think not. My initial comment were of a constructive nature and were intended to ascertain whether other people had same the same problem. Nothing more. You really have to stop reading more into my comments than what is actually there.

I think Craig0 makes a valid point here. While the law may protect consumers to a degree regarding replacement of faulty goods, an apology at least from the distributors and retailer is always good PR. Douglas Johnson as a general rule do indeed have outstanding service and I'm surprised they didn't do a little more in this case, especially as a possible trip of a lifetime may have been compromised because a product they distribute proved faulty.

If you spent all that money on the trip and you didnt take spare line with you then you have at least learnt a valuable lesson!! DJs did all they have to and if you choose not to buy and use there products from now you are missing out on some of the BEST!Cry

Posted By: Craig0
Date Posted: 18 Jul 2008 at 9:32am
Well Elpesador. As I have already stated spare line was taken on the trip. The cortland Braid was purchased as a bulk spool which allowed for a refill if needed.  Which of course was useless. You are right when you state that DJ's did all they HAVE to, but if it was one of my products then I would be just a tad more concerned then they appear to be.
I will also state once again that my intention for this post was not slag DJ's. It still early days and we will wait to see what further action they might take. The intention was purely to see if others had experienced a similar problem and to make others aware that a problem may exist with this product.

This may be a stupid question but was it definatly 37kg line? It wasnt 30lb spooled up at the shop by mistake was it? That would certainly explain the 14kg breaking strain and inability to replicate.

Serious questions, not being smart or having a go.

Why i say you have bitten off more than you can chew is that i have posted comments like  yours and they have ended in nothing but trouble. This site is monitered by large companies like shimano and thiers a fine line between slagging a product and just posting your personal opinions about how you had a bad batch or a bad experience...thier is no such thing as a personal opinion on a public forum..just a warning from someones whos had thier hand slapped once or twice..

P.S What happens if the braid tests ok on the line tester ????

Why the need for an opology from the importer ?? maybe a "sorry mate" from the retailer when he handed over the replacement spool but shurly thats enough is it not...i would be stoked to get a t shirt thrown in ..

Im not arguing for the sake of arguing matt im just miffed that in this day and age where the personal "mum and dad " service that was around 20 years ago has gone to a degree and the almighty dollar has become the most important part of the retail experience..

im sorry but im going to have to agree that for me the cortland braid was rubbish!(i do acknowledge others have had no trouble with it though)
Jigging for kingis on top end gear ,fish up to 15 kg were ok but anything bigger the braid snapped at random places ...sure i had alot of hurt on them to keep them off the reef but on 37kg braid you should be able to do that
im not talking a once off it happened consistantly over a 6 month period...i know i should have replaced it just kept hoping it was a fluke
Iswitched to coloured jigmaster braid from japan that a friend was using  and its great i have not looked back ...you do get what you pay for however as its not as cheap as the cortland but then neither are jigs lost at 40 bucks a pop!

I've used cortland 80lb braid a bit (mostly for old style 'Puka drops) and never had a problem. I don't use it now just because the Jigman and Varivas braids I've also got are that much thinner for the same nominal breaking strain and easier to use with colour bands.
Has anyone tried the Blackwater spectra hollow core  16 strand braid from the USA? It aint cheap but hollow core offers some nice advantages for leader connection.Question

Yeah I have just been to ICAST and seen a demo of the Blackwater hollow core. The guy was splicing his leader in to the braid it was very impressive, there was no knot at all in his rig. He was also using it as a sleeve to splice normal braid to leader which was also bloody impressive.

I can get some in if there is a demand for it....
