"Serial, violent" Sydney mother and son deported to NZ

November 14, 2008, 8:56 pm

A New Zealand woman and her son are being deported home after "terrorising" their local communities at Airds in south-western Sydney, police say.

The pair, both Samoan-born New Zealand nationals, had long criminal records and the community would be "happy to see the last of them", said New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione.

Police arrested the woman, 43, at a house in Gundowringa Place, Airds, and her 23-year-old son at a business at Airds Road, Minto, at 7am today, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The pair were told their visas had been cancelled and they were taken to Villawood detention centre, from where they will be deported to New Zealand , police said.

The pair were "serial violent criminals who have served jail sentences on several occasions", said Mr Scipione.

"This woman and her son are responsible for a number of robbery and drug offences and have been terrorising the community of Airds for years -- and police have had enough," he said.

"Since arriving 11 years ago this woman has accumulated a long criminal history for offences including drug supply, assault and intimidation.

"Her son has been in Australia 10 years and in that time has run up a history for several serious armed robbery and intimidation offences.

"They are well known to police, well known to various government departments and well known to the people of Airds -- who, no doubt, will be happy to see the last of them."

Airds was where another New Zealander, John Frederick Thompson, murdered his Australian partner, Fallon Baker, in 2006.

Thompson was sentenced to a maximum 20 years in jail and with the minimum 15-year sentence will be eligible for parole on February 28, 2021.
