got to one of my hot large snapper catching areas at about seven am monday morning.started putting out a nice berley trail on the last part of the  incoming tide as son as the tide stopped berleyed 20kgs of blue machrels and pilchards. as soon as the tide just started to move casted a nice medium sized flying fish out as bait.this got nailed after four minutes by a large hog  red result fought that fish for five minutes on 6kg only to loose it due to hooks coming out o well you get that. second bait i throw out once again a flyer gets taken on 6kg rig. result a nice 10 plus kg fish landed. bite only lasted for first hour and a half of the out going tide which happens about ninety percent of the on horn we managed plenty of quality fish in the  6 to 7 kg range which we released also. a nice day had by all on the boat.

im going to let the cat out of the bag for those that don't know "Justin" alias "cod" he works for Hooked on Fishing in whangaparaoa..... so if you have time or live in this area and need info on fishing these areas for big snaps just ask him well if you can catch up with him that is........ because when hes not at work he will be out on some charter boat or with Rick Pollock or chasing snapper in the Gulf..........

What is the biggest of each species (swordies and tunas) you have seen?

Did you get any BIG marlin or sharks on your longlines as well?

hey kerren lots of bigeyes to 100plus. yellowfin to90kgs southerns to140plus. northerns to250kgs lost one on the gear one day over 800 to 900 crimp pulled. that same day two giants of 820 and 850plus were caught in the area off tolaga bay wide. lots of huge swords 200 to 400kgs the biggest swords on average are on the west coast of the south island none under 200kgs the problem with them which is good is that the big boys smash the gear to bits all that needs to happen to stop the by catch of them is to ban bloody light sticks and no fishing for them on the full moon period youre going to screw the fishery with 500light sticks set on each line shallow over that period you dont use or need 500sticks a set to catch tuna the guys doing this are not tuna fisherman..

Cheers Jusitn

a grander Northern Bluefin would be an amazing site to see....I was showing Peter da Squid some photos last night of Atlantic fish in that class.

BEASTS!!

"the biggest swords on average are on the west coast of the south island" = the "Monster Patch" off Fiordland? or Challenger Plateau?

I hear ya re: banning light sticks!

Perhaps we need to start a new thread mate.....some very interesting stuff to be discussed about commercial surface longlinning!

Your obviously a very experienced fisho and i look foward to hearing any tips or methods you wanna share....

Just to re-emphasise what Lethal has said about dropping in on Justin. When I arrived in NZ seven years ago, I knew nothing about the way you do your fishing in this country (both straylining and berleying were not practised where I come from).  I would spend many a lunch hour in a retail outlet in Newmarket where Justin and another great fisho, Pat Langevad, now of Auckland Marine then worked. Justin and Pat were both always willing to help and offer their advice, no matter how dumb the question may have been.  Advice like theirs, offered with humility and based on experience, is what makes you want to go back to the places they are at, time after time. We are indeed fortunate to have the likes of these guys sharing freely on this forum.

Cheers

Keith
