Some would say the season has
finished, some would say we are not trying hard enough.
Well I had a good season but did
not catch any thing to speak of. I wondered what I was doing wrong, was it the
lures, boat, speed, weather, colour of water, sunshine, or lack off, wind, too
much or too little, where I was fishing or if my mate was wearing the correct
undies. Well that was the best excuses I could muster for my bad fishing.
To try and get the best out of
Marlin and big game fishing you have to be in the right place, right time with
the best gear you can. If you do not have what it takes it’s hard, therefore I
am going to put up a challenge to all those who wish to partake in listing their
10 top lure.
Some years ago several lure
makers in the
USA got together
and after discussion they listed their top 10 picks.
http://www.fishntexas.com/tips_top_10_marlin_lures.htm - http://www.fishntexas.com/tips_top_10_marlin_lures.htm
The next is a pick from a few
years ago so if you look back you can see if your minds have changed.
http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=17320&PN=1 - http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=17320&PN=1
I was wanting
New Zealand
fisherman to put up there version of the top 10 Lures for the 2010 season to
come. After the season has been completed we can calculate what has been caught
and relate to what we all thought will be the best lures and even the best
fisherman can learn by some others gain.
Therefore I am asking you all to
list in preference from 1 to 10, if you want to add a picture of them all from
left (1) to right (10).
Listing the position you would
run each lure.
Listing what time of the day (if
there is a preference) and what colour you would run.
Listing how many lures you
run.
Here’s a few to choose from, lets
see how many of these you all choose.
Pakula, Joe Yee, Black Magic,
Boone, Legend, Broadbill, Bonze, Blue Dog, Jc’s , Red Gill, Marlin Magic,
Yo-zuri, Black Bart, Zuker’s, Graham Dowsing, Williamson, Pacific, Sea Tal, Mold
Craft, IIlander, Copa, Bob Schneider, Makaira, Gary Yamamoto, Hooker, Sadu,
Murray Bros, Seven Strand, Big T, Hollow Point, Catch-a-lot, Alan Jorian, Top
Gun, Shi Bite, Trophy, Meridian, Peter Montague, Hatteras, Multi Strike,
Hawaiian Sea Lures.
Here’s a few head shapes to add
to the list to think about, Pusher, Slope, Kona-Scooped, Bullet, Plunger, Flat,
Tube, Jet.
Now add the colour and you got
the mix.
I am sure that you all know that
the different lure makers name there own lures with different names for the
different shapes that’s what it makes it the most awkward to work out the
best.
I am sure I have left out your
favourite brand, but please add it to your pick.
P.S. I have been on this site for
such a short time, but learnt heaps and met some nice people.
Thanks for looking at my listing
and responding

Dunno, if last year was anything to go by I had a different 10 at the end to the 10 I started the season with...
I tend to change head with the conditions, dead flat something that has a lot of throw and splash and a heavier straight runner in the heavy stuff. Light colours in the dawn and dusk and on dark overcast days, and darker shades on the bright days.
As fof the fav 10, I try not to stick to one type. If it doesn't fly or get any attention over a couple of hours try something else.
But, I have a heap of Kilwell lures, and couple of Pakula's and am aiming for a Bnze or two for this season - first with my own tub so should be interesting...

Hey Wannabe, thanks for putting this post up as I'm in bed with flu and really enjoyed reading thru both the historical links you put in your post.
My pick is initially similar to Saltigas, which is reassuring :
1) Black magic stripey2 lumo (SR)
2) Joe Yee super plunger evil (LC/ LR)
3) Legend Enki black and purple weighted head (SC)
4) Zuker 5.5 black and purple (LC/LR)
Then it gets harder....
5)Top Gun Lumo -with revolving head -I don't have one but another skipper I know has one and it was by far their most productive (LR/SR). He is now semi-retired from game fishing but won't part with it.
6) Bonze Appache black purple- have only run mine a few times, maker assures me it will work which is good enough for me (LR/LC)
7) Pacific P581 old model -bue white and pink -caught my 1st and biggest stripe on it, only hit by Albies since. (LC/LR)
8) Azza's Kona Swimmer- Mrs Palmer - responsible for a 25kg YFT while hanging 30 merters below my stationary boat while live baiting off Knights. (SR/LR)
9) Red Gill Scad -purchased late last season, run once but others had success on it (LR/SG) meant to be good early season.
10) Not sure -would love to try lots of lures in some of the other picks -angry squid colours appeal.
Now of the opinion that given the great LOCAL lure makers we have, we should support them - we are very spoilt with the choice and quality of product available. Same probably goes for for rods -although you pay a bit more. Plus the local lure makers are more than happy (as shown by posts here) to give very informed advice on how to get the best out of their creations.
I met Roddy Hayes at the boat show a few years ago. I was not going to buy any more lures.
We talked about what lures I ran and I let slip I did seem to have a dead spot on my SC. Its a small Stabi -similar to what he fishes. He suggested the weighted Enki was the answer as what I was putting there probably wasn't being seen and the lure needed to get under my prop wash. He was subsequently proved very, very right. In the Tuts one base the following season on a calm day we watched a striped marlin roar thru our spread to where the Enki was workin ust off our transom. That day only about three fish (including ours) were weighed out of 100 odd boats. Lucky or good advice? Without the advice I assure you that lure would not have been running there.

Nice thread there Wanabe and Ill add initially too it by posting the results from the Forum Comp for this season which makes interesting reading
For a total of about 114 marlin
Top manufacturers
Legend lures 25
Pakula Lures 23
Zucker 20
Natural bait 13
Bonze Lures 9
Joe Yee 4
Top Eight Lures for the Season
Zucker 5.5 BP 16
Pakula Lumo Sprocket 15
Natural Bait 13
Legend Cupped Iduna 7
Legend Merlin 6
Bonze Kahawai 5
Legend Unicorn 5
Joe Yee Super Plunger 4
Figures pretty much say it all apart from the fact that the Zucker would almost be in everyones spread and as such would have a higher ratio of fish caught than most others and as such maybe a heavily weighted result in the bigger scheme of things.

I think the same could be said for the Lumo Sprocket. Most would have and run one at some stage. The impressive stat is the Unicorn, not many of them around

Agreed, and the Cupped Iduna as well. These were pretty much all with the one boat being Adam Scott along with the Merlin :)
I started running this myself this year and it worked brilliantly in close and after raising a couple of fish in that area which I hadnt had happen before it was quickly locked and loaded for that position. Runs very nicely :)

Wannabe -your right on there - gaining knowledge is a large part of what game fishing is about. There's only two ways to get it -doing it yourself, or gleaning it from others who've already been there. I still have plenty to learn -if I didn't it wouldn't be such an exciting sport for me. I've been game fishing about 8 years seriously for marlin, previously was mad on landbased game and small boat fishing for big snaps and kings -even got NZAC record for snapper on 8kg. But when I started getting into marlin I did it mainly through reading a few articles (and there weren't many) and being self taught -which for me was solo gamefishing -crazy really! There wasn't the info we have now through a fantasic site like this and I didn't have a PC -as result I spent three years just trying to catch my first marlin -did manage some large makos and YFT though -but was very frustrating. Lure choice and lack of outriggers I now know to be reason for lack of initial success. One day I remember landing skippies and each time a big purple ball would come up behind them -the rest of skippie school I thought at first-they were marlin but everytime I caught a skippie I'd put the boat in neutral to bring it in and my marlin lures would stop working. Finally one big stripee about 140Kg came up and proceeded to swim around my boat dorsal and tail almost out of the water as if to say you are no threat because you haven't got a clue. Another day in those early years, I saw a very large (probably black) marlin swim past my bow and smash into a pile of saury and completely ignore my lures. Am a little wiser now and much more prepared. Wish I could have got the good oil earlier though -would have definitely caught more fish. Time on the water is a fantastic teacher but good advice certainly speeds up the process.
Westspot -those are very interesting stats

Thanks wetspot.
I have all the catch records from WDSA for the last 6 years and I am collecting a total of each like date, time boated, where, and what lures, and one thing I see is that not a lot get caught on livies, in 2009 there was only 2 stripies and 1 broad bill and 2 stripies on dead baits. going by the stats given
So I guese that lures are here to stay for a while till I learn how to catch the marlin on a livie

The stats Lance put up are all and well, but what really matters for a lure is strikes per hour in water and whether the lure is trolled in the hot location in the spread, now the Lumo Sprocket and B/P Zuker 5.5 are usually trolled on the riggers which on most boats is probably the spot which gets more strikes than any other lure position. I know alot of people on here who do a lot of fishing will often troll these two lures on the riggers almost all the time and change lures in the other positions. What you may find is that the catch per unit effort with these lures may not be very good at all.
What would be nice for next season is if people could also keep a record of the hours they do and what lures were trolled where and what got strikes, this way we should get some better indication of what lures are performing best.
Also another issue is where people are fishing, if for example you were fishing off Tauranga then your catch per unit effort I am afraid to say is always (generally anyway) going to be lousy no matter what you have out, there are just not many marlin here.

Interesting statement from Marligator and possibly quite true.
If we look at Wetspots list the Bonze Kahawai at 5 catches must work out to be one of the best as how many would have it and run it like the cupped Iduna 7 what colour ???.
Makes good reading like the stats form WDSA, i will post something soon.

its funny you say this mate, I was going threw the log on the gps and looked at the miles I had done for the season it was staggering to say the least. as for those two lures yes always in the spread always on the riggers, this year I had 95% of hits on the zuker 5.5 but it was not just the B/P I have made my own zuker special and it was in the 1st wave and nailed, 2nd wave for another zuker was nailed put the zuker on either rigger nailed infact where ever it was run it was smashed, this season my Lumo had a poor showing but regardless was still run off the rigger, it got nailed alot but this season not as much as the Z this coming season maybe totaly different, such is the game we play

Lance - with the Legend Cupped Iduna, Legend Merlin, Bonze Kahawai and Legend Unicorn how many different boats caught fish on them or was it the same boat who who caught all of them for each lure type and were they all caught on one trip to the Kings etc.
I am more interested in lures that are getting hit (with a good hookup rate) regularly throughout a season by a number of boats all around the coast rather than one lure that gets 20 fish on one boat all caught at the kings where there are heaps of marlin and you could probably tow a banana with a hook in it and still get a marlin. I think that is the type of lures that people are really interested in.

Guys just a small thought to throw into the pot... if I may...
We can gather facts until we are blue in the face and we can gather statistics and model mathematical equations until we are blue in the face, but, we cannot use that to accurately predict or decipher what should or will work due to calculus and standard deviations with distributed and applied physics towards the correct and pure proven calculated LURE, albeit: brand associated or colour coordinated.,,dadadaa!
Just get a few known, recommended and proven favourite head shapes and skirt colours (as seen from many guys above) and just get out there and DO IT!
The results will come with time and experience...research and development, trial and error, patience and persistance...never give up...keep asking, trying and experimenting
Every boat is different, every FISH is different, try different things...fishing is not science, is not perfect and never will be.
If it was predictable then it would be boring, that is what keeps us coming back to the thrill of the chase!

Bill Hall has caught over 50 fish on the Old Blue himself, mind you it was years ago and at the Kings!!
Wanabe, I've fished for Marlin for years and I've been to the Kings 7 times on charters. Cascade, Oracle, pursuit and Striker. After seeing what these guys have learned over many years you soon see there is bugger all luck to do with it. If you do your home work, prepare, have the right gear and most of all have local knowledge you almost always get one.
Thats way I'm on here, to keep learning .

Its all good doin the stats, but every day/coastline is different to the next - whilst running the proven lures, we were gettin our hits on some more randoms... making them stick was the problem, unless they were coming in on the corners with big teeth -

Jimmy Nail, I agree the Broadbill lures are great and if I could afford a few i would buy some, but the prices are pretty steep.
On the boats I have been fishing on for the last 10 years or so we have had no marlin shots on the short lures, all on the Riggers or shotgun, I have tried all sorts of lures in the short positions.
One of the problems with fishing in the BOP is the lack of fish and hence you do not know if the lures are working or not in those positions you may just be zigging when you should be zagging. A really good day in the BOP is 3 shots, during the height of the northland season when the fishing is good 3 shots is often a pretty poor day, in those situations you get to know which lures are working and those that are not over a couple of weeks fishing, not the case down here, even at Waihau Bay it can be pretty hard work unless you get there when it is really firing which usually only lasts a couple of weeks.
What are peoples idea of a really good short corner or long corner lure from a fizz boat. Note I am not that keen on really big lures so something about 10 to 12 inches is what I am looking for.

If you live in Auckland go and see Fred bailey at broad bill custom lures he'll spend days with you telling you what to do he's caught more fish than most!! and hand makes the lures according to what you're fishing for and what area and what bait you're trying to imitate.
great south road, penrose

As like most lure makers they all have stories to tell.
I have met Fred and he has lots to tell, and he has his own way of fishing, like most others.
If we all brought Broad bill lures we would all catch fish, but there are other lure makers that do just as well.
I have about 300 lures but still do not have the right one as im a wannbe / marlin fisherman.
May be there is a lot more to catching - Marlin than trawling or fishing for or trying or having lots of luck. Some times I get lost but one thing for sure I will never catch one looking at the computer screen, but what I hope to do is narrow down the lures I have to ones that catch.
Can you list any other lures you would use.

Jimmy Nail, I had a few discussions with Fred in the late 1980's and early 1990's up in the BOI at various tournaments, he has a huge amount of knowledge that he was willing to share. Pity I never got a chance to fish with him it would have been interesting.

Thanks for your comments I have read with interest, my friend i fish with runs a blade runner copy, and we have only caught 1 marlin in 4 years
We have worked out that we are trawling in a desert, but with the 2 motors we will be running the lures further back this year as we feel that in a trailer boat, the motor noise the white wash and the turbulence, is to much for close running of lures, and in a trailer boat the length of the wave pattern is shorter so we are going to double the wave patterns normally used.

Whilst not to attractive the williamson was the lure getting the most activity off the east coast - We were running our lures close to strike on the drag and failing - tried softer drags and they got dropped ....

ask lance about the stripey that ate our Broadbill anrgy squid lure 1m from the transom in the middle of some pretty nasty wash..... 10m boat, twin outboards.....it looked like a grade 5 white water rapid yet the stripey still smashed the snot out of the lure in front of our eyes
In the latest Blue water all the favourite stripey lures for oz are smaller straight running lures........elephants eat peanuts it seems

Wanabe - I fish either from my mates 6m AMF or my own 4.65m Mclay. My mate used to have a McLay 17 fisherman and the marlin used to take the short lure (10m from back of boat) no probs, but since getting his AMF in 1996 we have not had a single marlin hit on a flat line lure. Although I have to admit we do not run the rigger lures that far back as the outriggers are not that high.
On my small boat only had it for two seasons and had the one shot on a flat line but that was only because I did not have outriggers at the time, this year no marlin strikes at all but that is Tauranga for you.
The first marlin I was ever involved with from a private boat was a stipey which took a kahawai swimmer bait run about 25-30 feet behind a 9.9hp motor we were trolling with, it was running at nearly full noise pushing us along at about 4 knots and making a hell of a noise, but it did not scare the marlin.
Yes it is an intersting read that article in the latest Blue Water magazine, well worth a read guys. If I was fishing off the west coast which is essentially a striped marlin fishery I would only troll smaller lures of 6 to 10 inches.
Interesting that most people say troll big lures in close and small lures further back, when I use to fish with Barney MacGibbon on his boat Pisces one of our most successful lures was a little lure similar to a pakula cockroach but only about 2/3 the size and we use to run this about 25 feet off the back of the boat and it got hit alot, especially by smaller marlin.

Wanabe,
amongst your 300 lures have you got a Hooker BS or MS white/brown(Ghost)? I run one religiously and it hogs the action (when there is action),is it a good lure or is it because I give it the best window and most time in the water or all of the previous

guys, he has mentioned they have got marlin, they run a cat and in 4 yrs have got one marlin
you have to be doing it right, you need fine tuning to get the best out of your gear.
personally I would be running 4 sets and if you have one a spare for an already rigged bait,
lures are simple, straight runners and 12inches is heaps, in fact the 5.5 is the biggest lure in my spread.
as for setting your gear, ok so you have decided where you going to run your lures, I am at a loss as to why so far back? your boat white water the harmonics are all part and parcel to teasing the fish your after, your long corner for me would be where i decide its easy stuff, mine is the same side as my prop spins??????????
here is a tip now i dont know how many times I have said it, dont wait like alot do and set the boat up during the season, me I set mine up come late October early November.
no marlin around then or is there? but anyways I tow gear up and down the harbour in flat conditions. this allows me to see my pressure wave, yes I have a 38ftr but hell at times it is hard to see the wave.
ok I now set my out riggers 1st, when they are running where I want and at a speed that I like i then get power gum and make the loops up they are very easy To make them up I do not release the line from the rigger I pull it down and make the loop, there is still tension on the line so this helps, the same can be done with dacron loops but power gum is the bomb. ok so you have set up both sides with power gum loops? reset to the hieght you like on the rigger.
ok now you set up your short and long corners. easy stuff now what I have done is to set the corners but i also tie a half side of a power gum loop, when this hit the rod tip my lure is set, simple stuff however i do run both corners with bent butts. and when I dont I run short tag lines, these are ajustable to allow me to set the hieght of the line to the lure, easy stuff ay. I also run a shot gun if I have crew for it......... ok so your set and they are swimming nice, ok lets fine tune them a bit.
I mentioned speed its not all about 8kts dont be fulled by that, you need to run you boat where it is comfortable and where your lures are working, you will know if they are not they look sluggish and dont pop and carry on. Peter P makes the hybrids, they can be towed alot slower, the guy puts thought into his designs etc so it pays to read or watch his dvds etc.
ok speed up the boat your at 8kts the lures start to bounce, no good slow down until they settle down it maybe just 6.5kts it may be 7 etc.
ok looking good so now you add either a power gum loop or a dacron sleeve to each rigger line they should be about 2m from the initial loop. this depends on your set up. ok the reason for this is simple, sea conditions lure speed and head type, these extra loops allow you to get the best out of your boat speed lure hight and best out of your lure now in a sea it may mean you have to slow down, bugger my lures are not running, easy stuff pull the lure in to the 1st loop and set it, this adds more hieght or it maybe the other way let it out to the last loop. when you have dacron loops or P/G loops it is so simple to set up hell my young fella does it. they are always there and always back to that same old spot in the wash.
ok so you have been trying for 4 years and got one, big deal many try and never even see one, the boat must be working all you need to do is tune it all to work, and you mention towing lures in a desert, well very true but mate this is where you need to be in the club room ahving a beer and listening to the talk, use the resourse it is free, no good going in the opposite direction to the fish, then above all you need to be on your game, no good sleeping you need to be looking scanning investigating anything you see, a bird on the water a floating piece of crap current lines and know how to use those current lines, ask any game fisherman worth his salt and they tell you how to work a line, forget about those who say the troll up and down them you need to work them. guys that get a marlin in there 1st season, its great they have done what alot want, but then come the following season they dont get any maybe the odd shot, well were they lucky the 1st time, I recon a guy who looses 10 marlin then gets one will be the most thrilled, why cause he has felt the pain of loosing a few and he has earnt this one. patience and time on the water, straight running lures be prepared it will happen. and as I have said many times patience and time on the water also the remeber the 6 Ps

This thread is seriously insaine.
Do people here really think there is a magic lure? Or do you think the lures you tow most are the ones you catch the most on?
Nearly 20% of the fish caught in the forum stats were caught on the Zuker 5.5. So does anyone really think if the Zuker was banned from our waters because it was unfair to fish that our catches would drop by 20%?..........No of course not, we would tow some other bit of plastic and do just as well. We caught over 50marlin on the Pacific FruitSalad, wow sounds impressive...that must be a great lure.........well NO, it was towed every time we went fishing and only caught 25% of the fish we caught(1 of 4 lines towed), didnt tow it at all this year and still managed to catch a few,,,The piece of plastic that replaced it caught its 25% worth.
I mean if you look at the Stats, one of the most successful lures ever isnt there, the moldcraft wide range......is that because its crap....is it because it doesnt work here.......or is it because no one here towed one much.

:P good ideas - i have my personal fav lures, and they were the ones that got the attention this year - i think the most important thing is simply this, after your lures are working right, your planned and have systems in place for when that strike comes and your alert and "hunting" the fish rather then sleeping its this simple
Pay your money, take your chances...
its the simple
Plan, time, money patients
it wil come.
gee tow a jandle or a thong long enough, eventually your get one :P

I am more interested in lures that are getting hit (with a good hookup rate) regularly throughout a season by a number of boats all around the coast rather than one lure that gets 20 fish on one boat all caught at the kings where there are heaps of marlin and you could probably tow a banana with a hook in it and still get a marlin. I think that is the type of lures that people are really interested in. |
Wouldnt it make more sense to see the range of lures used by one boat over varied locations to see a more even comparison, that way the variable of the boat, crew and knowledge(or lack of) of what they are doing is the same. Then the % of time the lure was towed, the % of fish the lure caught may actually mean something.

This is great stuff Adam and you are right it is what should be expected if you are totally familiar with your boat, strike zones and have lures that work really well in those positions (as you obviously are) and another great plus with fishing where you do is having plenty of marlin to play with, because if you are not getting marlin up you are probably doing something wrong. Down hear in the central BOP i.e. Tauranga in recent years you just do not have the luxury of plenty of marlin to play with you may just be zigging when you should be zagging i.e not running over them, I know of experienced boats who have caught alot of fish going a whole season for only one or two shots, you can't learn much by trial and error in these situations. Some would say the main error is fishing these waters and this is probably true.

ok I now set my out riggers 1st, when they are running where I want and at a speed that I like i then get power gum and make the loops up they are very easy To make them up I do not release the line from the rigger I pull it down and make the loop, there is still tension on the line so this helps, the same can be done with dacron loops but power gum is the bomb. ok so you have set up both sides with power gum loops? reset to the hieght you like on the rigger.
ok now you set up your short and long corners. easy stuff now what I have done is to set the corners but i also tie a half side of a power gum loop, when this hit the rod tip my lure is set, simple stuff however i do run both corners with bent butts. and when I dont I run short tag lines, these are ajustable to allow me to set the hieght of the line to the lure, easy stuff ay.
Peter P makes the hybrids, they can be towed alot slower, the guy puts thought into his designs etc so it pays to read or watch his dvds etc.
ok speed up the boat your at 8kts the lures start to bounce, no good slow down until they settle down it maybe just 6.5kts it may be 7 etc.
ok looking good so now you add either a power gum loop or a dacron sleeve to each rigger line they should be about 2m from the initial loop. this depends on your set up. ok the reason for this is simple, sea conditions lure speed and head type, these extra loops allow you to get the best out of your boat speed lure hight and best out of your lure now in a sea it may mean you have to slow down, bugger my lures are not running, easy stuff pull the lure in to the 1st loop and set it, this adds more hieght or it maybe the other way let it out to the last loop. when you have dacron loops or P/G loops it is so simple to set up hell my young fella does it. they are always there and always back to that same old spot in the wash.
ok so you have been trying for 4 years and got one, big deal many try and never even see one, the boat must be working all you need to do is tune it all to work, and you mention towing lures in a desert, well very true but mate this is where you need to be in the club room ahving a beer and listening to the talk, use the resourse it is free, no good going in the opposite direction to the fish, then above all you need to be on your game, no good sleeping you need to be looking scanning investigating anything you see, a bird on the water a floating piece of crap current lines and know how to use those current lines, ask any game fisherman worth his salt and they tell you how to work a line, forget about those who say the troll up and down them you need to work them. guys that get a marlin in there 1st season, its great they have done what alot want, but then come the following season they dont get any maybe the odd shot, well were they lucky the 1st time, I recon a guy who looses 10 marlin then gets one will be the most thrilled, why cause he has felt the pain of loosing a few and he has earnt this one. patience and time on the water, straight running lures be prepared it will happen. and as I have said many times patience and time on the water also the remeber the 6 Ps
oh I have not always owned a launch I have run 3 trailer boats as well.

yip happy to, infact there will be a number of silly buggers doing just this , kezz you still got those lures? or are they the ones Mike got, if not you know where I live.

How many marlin did you catch on the 2 lures shown. Is the cupped Iduna a 16 and I think the other is a 22 Inki ??? What other lures that Obold will have do you think someone should tow. ps I have been to his place and own about 9 legend lures.

Legend Dracula (daughters right hand) = none - but that is not real surprising as never got wet
Legend Merlin (daughters left hand) = 26 - I personally only wound in one of those.
Obald has Enkis, Unicorns, Andromedas, Vulcans....all manner of other legends....

Marligator - I was interested in your comment re: not getting hit on the short lures, as this was the case on my boat for a few years when all our marlin strikes were on riggers particulary the short rigger lumo. As per my first post on this tread getting some advice from Roddy Hayes was the start to changing that -and last three season we have had just as many hits and actually more fish off short and long corners. The reasons why are:
1) we now run only certain head shapes in these positons (plunger style, heavier the better, bigger (with exception of Enki), and generally darker lures like Black and purple -but evil successful as well - Lures successful were weighted, Enki, Joe Yee Appollo/ or Plunger/Zucker - which is a heavy tube -these have all been good.
2) Was also told (by Roddy) flatlining lures in these positions can be a mistake as it limits their action and how deep they can dive -transom on my stabi -aint that high anyway. So towing point is important thing to consider in affecting action.
3) You also want these lures running at reasonable speed as they need to "Pop" a bit -great thing is they are easier to see being close -its always harder to to seee how long rigger is running in trailer boat.
As Adam's stats show te corners are certainly as good positions as riggers on his boat. And I would suggest marlin are neither wary of outboard noise or propwash and the issue is more making sure your lure in the short positions is noticed and attracts the fish's attention.
Wannabe -300 lures owned is more than the biggest tackle shops I know. I'd would be interested to know if anyone else owns more than 300 -as strongly suspect it must be a NZ record. I am going shopping to Go-fish this arvo to secure a cheap -seven strand orange and black job which might bring my tally up to 20 odd - I don't think I will get another 270 lures though.

(Marlingator) Interesting that most people say troll big lures in close and small lures further back, when I use to fish with Barney MacGibbon on his boat Pisces one of our most successful lures was a little lure similar to a pakula cockroach but only about 2/3 the size and we use to run this about 25 feet off the back of the boat and it got hit alot, especially by smaller marlin.
Not an expert but I think the rationale behind that one may partly be that fishing a short line with less line stretch helps bigger lures with bigger hooks etc.. get a better hookup. Also think running a bigger thing up close helps act like a teaser ie. draw them in closer to the boat and hopefully if they miss it or don't take it they drop back and eat something smaller on the rigger. There is definitely a case though, if you know you're raising a lot of fish in x position, to put something there that will maximize your hookups. I have been pretty lucky that most boats I fished on raised them well in the corners and on some you could normally expect most fish to show up close in. This year 10 out of 16 blue marlin have come up close to the boat, second or third wave.
Adam that was some great statistical info, thanks for sharing. Do you keep logs of fish that were hooked and lost and missed strikes as well? Counting in those ones, would your stats still work out at approx 25% for each position or for e.g. the flat lines might start to pull ahead? Just interested to know.
cheers - dustin

Shaneg - I read your earlier post about your discussion with Roddy with a lot of interest and have been PM a few of the guys as to what lures they run short and looking at the Legend Lures website and almost certainly will be buying a couple of lures to run off the corners before next season.

good on the man if he owns 300 lures, a great skipper one day said buying lures is like having sex, you just cant get enough, how right is he, me I have a few bags of them and a suit case full but no matter what I run 4 maybe 5 some have never been wet, will I buy more, well hell yeah, in fact I have some coming soon being made for me straight running tubes to be fair and will be skirted in the normal colors.
for those who asked by PM
short corner is a legend 22 Cleopatra friggin awesome and is a regular contender to be smashed, infact shes a battered wee girl long corner is one of two lures Broad-bill angry squid or the Joe Yee in pink silver and blue again they get smashed. and those who asked about the shotty, there are two I run both legends one a Frankenstein 12 in B/A colors the other is a legend unicorn 16 ? in blue pink silver, have only run the unicorn this season, if you have not got one, best you talk to Obald. All lures are straight running and all though the boat has a sweet spot I am unable to find it, all lures get hit from those on the 1st wave to those on the 6th Patience and time spent doing it team really thats all there is to it, then when you get is sused look out then there is hooks and leaders and doubles and....................

Sounds like a plan to me Steve. I think I will buy more lures. WHY I asked myself ????? because I can.
If you had the time and the want to collect anything you could, it may be worth a lot more later. You collector you.
SEA TAL $546-50 Y would any one pay that much. Because they can.
It is not what you do but how much fun you have doing it.
I have brought lots of lures and sold what I do not want. I am in it for the fun not to make money.
The 300 lures is an estimate and they are for all types of fishing.
You could say my collection.

wasn’t a criticism, I am in awe and watch your actions all the time as you never know when you might have that lure that ive been looking for.
We all have a passion for this ‘fishing lark’ you’ve only got to imagine how much we’ve all invested in our sport over the years to see this, we’re all collectors, hells teeth you only have to look in to most guys mansheds to see this.
The more shiny stuff the better in my view

Thanks for your kind words, My daughter and I thank you for your support on T/M.
Please let us know your T/M name and we will offer you a discount when purchasing every second lure, I hope you got the lure you wanted today and you feel you got a bargain.
I will point out that the Koda killer is possibly all we need, but I am a compulsive buyer and like good looking things.

I have about 300 lures but still do not have the right one as im a wannbe / marlin fisherman.
Some times I get lost but one thing for sure I will never catch one looking at the computer screen, but what I hope to do is narrow down the lures I have to ones that catch.
|
Mate, that is a problem. Tell you what, because Im such a nice guy I will take the 300 lures off your hands and narrow it down for you, replacing them with just 4 that catch fish, you will know that they work because they look like they have been dragged down a gravel road, so you can rest assured when you are towing them that fish will eat them.
What do ya recon.
Dustin, Ive never kept a list of fish we have missed. Seeing all those listed and knowing we didnt get them may make me too depressed.
I dont think the stats would alter too much tho if we did.

Out of all the lures I've had and still have, there's probably about 10 or 12 that just about fit all the situations we ever come/came across.
They are like lollies though, some just look nice and need to be in the bag for pure aesthetics.

Immmm, with all due respect to Joe Yee and yes I do have a few, there are more than enough of essentially similar dear I say it "the same maybe " lure head available via other well recognised lure manufacturers.
Id pop down and have a chat with Tazee at W.S lauries. He was skirting up some real nice lures that would do the trick in the Catchalot range that would be worth a gander at
Kilwell do another and so on and so on and so on

yes lance I have 2 catch-a- lot lures myself. I caught a Mahimahi had 5 strikes this season on the Lumo Gold and had a marlin on the season before and 3 strikes. It is almost the image of the Joe Yee Apollo.
I also own a C/L Medium Plunger yet to run it, that is the image of the Joe Yee medium plunger, head for head shape for shape in fact its a very good dear I say a copy.
I have learnt a lot about shapes and sizes, but as we are all learning I look forward to putting that experience to practice.
If the sizes and shapes are elsewhere I can sell some of the top named lures I own.
