Am looking to fit a drum anchor winch to our 7m boat. Am keen on the stressfree ,maybe with the freefall option but am concerned about the potential problems of over running and the rope getting over the side of the drum either on the way up or down. I understand there are other makes but I want to have a big enough drum to take 100m of rope. Any advice from others with drum winch set ups appreciated |

| Im quite keen to hear the outcome with this as well, a friend of mine spent a weekend away on a stabi with one on board and gave it a good work out he swore it was the bees knees, im pretty shore its the same winch matt watson uses on his stabi, i dont have the room to mount a standard winch in my anchorwell as the rope doesnt have enough fall underneath so this would be a good option for me as its deck mounted!! |

Received a stressfree lookalike last week (http://www.absolutemarine.co.nz/products/?productCatalogID=4780) just got to get around to seeing how it will fit on the 6.1.....think I will need some metalwork done if I want to mount in the anchorwell (my preferred option) . Significantly cheaper than the stress free but needed to source thermal switch and dash switch separately. I am assured that with the 6mm braided line can get 100m rope and some chain on this puppy. With all the other stuff I am doing as well as selling the old tub may take a wee while b4 I am on the water and rigged up. If the weather is good I am out fishing rather than working on the boat. |

| What size were the stressfree's you've fitted and what size boats? Were they free falls or standard.? I looked at the imported look alikes to day. The smaller version looks a bit light for my boat and 600watts may not have enough grunt, their bigger version looks good but the motor and gear box is very heavy, too heavy for the front of my boat. Looks like I'll have to raise my sights and look at the streesfree's. |

| I have a Workmate 5.5 with a Stressfree NG (freefall) mini installed. I run a Lewmar Delta 6kg anchor with 6m of 6mm chain and have had no problems at all with overrunning. The set up works very well, although it took a little bit of surgery to the deck to fit it in the well. Would recommend it for sure! I currently have 70m of 8mm nylon, but am looking to replace it with 100m of 6mm double braid soon. |

Can you post a picture of the surgery you needed to do? Is ? What was the cost to do the surgery , who did it and is there anything you would do differently?
I have the winch but still contemplating the fitting to my Surtees 6.1

fullas this is what a stressfree mini looks like with 100m double braid and 10m 6mm
the cheaper one is identical apart form the gear housing being painted.

What size boats that on toby??? Ive been looking at the midi 1400 "freefall" which is for 6mtrs + boats, just about shate me pants at the price, shop down in westhavens doing them for $3700!! Id need to do some mods by the look of the dimensions, weilding!! The ones from absolute marine dont look to bad, not badly priced either, whats the difference between the stressfree and absolute winch toby, are the absolute winches freefall?? Noticed they come with a foot switch

the difference?...i hant seen any apart from the paint job and price mate..but my opnions only, they have the same specs and build quality. The absolute one doesnt have a dash up down switch, or a thermal circut breaker for installation. the maxwell ones we use are great, bout $160-70 and $60-70 for the dash switch.

| Depending on boat size/weight you may need to be careful with some of the 6mm braid. I note that mine has a 1,000k breaking strain. OK for anchoring whilst fishing but may not leave enough safety margin on a larger boat for mooring at night? |

how do you figure that out al?...surely 1000kg is a 1000kg wetha ankid or anchored -
the customer i put the 6mm on got stuck in the weekend ...pulled the bow so far down that the prop come out of the water...they ended up sending a diver down to unsnag anchor

I am in Oz so my contacts won't be any use to you. It cost AU$400 to get done here. That included cutting, welding, mounting (with reinforcing plate behind) and wiring. It JUST fits and a fair bit of computer modelling was done first and a cardboard mock up was trial fitted before cutting took place.

what rope braid are you going to use?
does that include the winch or just the mods to the hull?
did you look at the possiblility of a standard auto winch and making a feed plate down into a modified anchor well?

Tobez - agree 1,000 k is same either way. But if fishing I can handle an anchor letting go easier than if moored and not on the boat (or sleeping) at end of day need to figure out reral effect of a 1,000 kg on a 6.1 tinny. Prob only an issue in a storm and you have anchored up for safety.
Mike - tidy job, seems those winches are popular in Aus. How strong is the bollard mounting now? There is more room in the 6.1, and I would like to get the entire winch in if possible......still figuring out the affect on my bollard - as thie will be affected due to an existing support strut that will need to go.
Was thinking of getting a 6mm Ali Triangle fabricated and welded on the top and along port and statboard edges to provide structural integrity for towing/tying off.

Tobez: The drum style winch was the only one I was interested in, as I had heard too many stories of problems with capstan style winches. I can't remember the exact type of rope but had a lengthy discussion about it with a local marine parts supplier here. It is some sort of poly rope and from memory I think it had 14 strand outer. I was assured that it would do the job, but I will do a bit more research before actually purchasing. That price was for modifications and installation only. The winch, rope, chain and anchor were extra. Not sure how much the winch was in the end, as I had it packaged with a heap of other accessories with the boat.
Red89mx: The bollard is nowhere near as strong as it was, as the brace which triangulates it back against the vertical rear surface of the well has been removed. They actually drilled the bollard out, put an M10 bolt through from underneath and then rewelded the bollard to the deck. At the end of the day a lot of bollards are bolted down with a couple of 3/16" bolts, so I reckon my set up would be stronger than that. I don't use it anyway but it might come in handy if the boat was to be towed.

great - we have put one on a stabi 529 whch has about the same sized well - the mechanic put the motor though the wall and sealed it up. diddnt look to bad and you could hide the cables etc...not great for maintenence but whats a bit of gunk every year or so ------------- Waikato North Harbourmaster...Got a Nav Safety question for the Waikato region?...call me 021705642 or download the app Marine Mate! |

I have been following this with interest. Two questions - anyone with experience of the Stressfree mini-
1. Might the battery power be insufficient? Mine is an Endurant 680, starting 90hp 4 stroke, bilge pump, fishfinder. Would a bigger battery be desirable, or a second battery?
2. Could you fit more than 100m 6mm braid and 10m chain on the mini? What maximum length do you reckon roughly?
