Hi all Just been to Devonport and came back with nothing! I went at the right time according to the biting time this morning, there were at least 2 big snappers caught during the this time. I got some good bites too, but mainly small snappers yapping up my squid. I can cast as far as the rest of them but just can't seem to land any proper fish  , so I'm thinking it must be the way I bait my squid! So help please!What's the best way of baiting squid stripes? and I'm using a dropper rig, what's the best distance between two hooks? Thank you

There are many factors in fishing, from baiting your hooks to just holding your mouth right  .If you are using recurve hooks, always put the dropper through the eye from the front of the hook. Put the hook through the bait only once and make sure the barb is well clear of the bait. |

| Thanks smudge, I think that's how I'm doing it at the moment but small snappers are always able to snatch it off without getting hooked on thus preventing any chances with the big ones. They are a nuisance! Is there a way to bait a stripe of squid without them stealing it so easily! I had to change my bait every 3 minutes at the moment! |

when i use a dropper rig i put to hooks a fixed one and a sliding on one loop and bait the fixed one so when i jerk the rod up i sometimes get the fish with the the sliding hook also known as a keeper hook good luck  |

The problem with keeper hooks is the tendency to catch little fish. I seldom use smaller than 6/0 hooks for snapper and an 8/0 will still take small snapper at times. Small hooks will virtually guarantee you will gut hook snapper. The exception are recurve hooks actively fished - as in you don't leave your rod untended and you stay in contact with the bait. When you get pestered by little snapper you can try bigger baits - yellowtail mackerel seems to work well on larger fish when there are little ones around. The other option is to try a different location. Try bigger baits first and see how you go. Avoid fishing the middle of the day and take note of what the successful anglers are doing such as rigs they use or time of the tide when they get decent fish. The problem is that it takes time on the water to become successful, looking & learning and asking questions is a real key to success, hence this forum. Let us know how you get on. |

Nick777 try salting some of your strip's of squid with rock salt for 7/8hrs first often toughens it enough to last that little longer and as Smudge says go up a size in bait or place two on same hook . ------------- woman who say they are equal to men ,show lack of Ambition . |

| The distance between droppers is best so that if you lift the bottom hook up and pull the other down they shouldn't meet, you'll get less tangles that way. Keep the droppers to around 100mm long and you should be right. good advice there on salted baits too, they are much tougher. |

You might want to try something a little diff. This rig has worked really well for me, you don't use up much squid and they will still go it if it gets ripped off. Using a size 5 softbait hook, small squid glow skirt and a tentacle or cut strip of squid, bigger/fresh squid are preferred as they have fat tentacles. Thread the squid on the hook like you would a softbait. Don't underestimate the small baits, I have got some real good sized fish using this rig. Work it like a softbait or just let it sit on the bottom, either way its a winner  . mmm I cant find the photo of the rig itself but here it is in this snappers mouth. Good luck dude, tight lines. |

Good advice alright...
Yes 6/0 Black Magic KL's (recurve)
Try either a green or the new Pink lumo beads the bigger ones, put on above the hook of your dropper, a little torch from the $2 shop will charge them up to glow...
If you can find smaller squid say 4 inches long put it on the hook whole thread it 3 times, squid strips thread on twice at least. Also take a little bait rod & catch some livies. Fillet the Mackerals & put it on the hook threaded twice...
You're not doing anything wrong, your day will come. Patience & perseverance is key to success.
Something else you might want to try is, distance between 1st hook & the sinker, 1m (yup not misprint)

Nick take a "sabiki" rigged rod and catch livies from around the wharf piles, "butterfly" em and cast them out....I can tell you that will last a heap longer. Good fun for the youn uns while you are haulin them in. Guranteed to catch bigger fish to. ------------- I STARTED THE DAY WITH NO FISH AND I STILL HAVE PLENTY LEFT |

My squid is cut up to bait sizes and usually long and not to wide... Then packed in salt in poly boxes for at least 2 months to toughen up... Completely covered up .....Then goes into plastic bag and I add fish oil and aniseed oil...Shake up now and then......Stays like that just about forever......Try it.. How are u sure it is small snappers and not bait fish?...which is very often the case Small snappers tend to get hooked, bait fish tend to get away with a free feed....as suggested drop a sabiki with good hooks on it.. Bite make good ones.. tiny bit of squid on the hooks. That way u will pull up bait fish, even small snaps , and if pannie snaps down there will pull those to... The snaps, will be lip hooked so return without damage. It doesnt matter if it is 2m or 40m if baits are being stolen we drop a sabiki to find out who is steeling them. |
