I got my coast gaurd members handbook 2011 and in it it says that the limit for snapper is now 10 unless in the sna1 area which is northcape to cape runaway.
SO DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE GULF ETC IS NOW A 10 snapper limit?

Do you not have a family who likes fish?
Do you not like smoked fish?

Yes but unfortunately the quota system doesnt allow for giving fish away and fish does not keep very long anyway. This is only my opinion on how much fish one person or family needs(through many years of fishing) and I will continue to only bring home enough for a feed as others who wish to bring home there full entitlement are also allowed to do.

i met a gripper (in a tackle shop) who i found out was fishing alongside us on sat for a while, who boasted he caught 30 tarakihi between 2 that day. i asked what he did with all that fish and he said he gave it nearly all away "left right and centre" and it was gone really quick, they would of been of good size too and he said 15 for 1 person was "nothing". and they caught other fish as well...

people take what they are allowed, what others think has nothing to do with it.... if you take what you think is enough then that is fine as well.... everyone has a different reason for taking the amount they choose, they fish with-in the law then that is fine by me and should be by you...
some cant get out as much as others therefore they tend to take more, in this day and age with vacuum sealing fish can be stored for up to 3mts and taste just as fresh as the day it was caught... cold smoked fish will keep for 3mths as well so no problem there either....
why tell others that could be in a totally different situation to yourselves that may be on the bones of there a$$ that they should do as you guys do, is just blowing your trumpet "Look at me" i only take 5 not 9, who really gives a sh-t...

Whether we take 3 or 5 or however many up to 9 snapper each doesnt matter one bit, it's literally a drop in the ocean compared to what the commercial sector take every year. Your 4 fish less will be having near zero impact on the fish stocks, especially when a trawler comes through and takes the whole school including those 4 fish just released.
If guys want to take their limit of snapper there should really be no issue with that. The QMS actually seems to be working relatively well for this species with regards to biomass and the fishery seems to be healthy. Average size does seem to be diminishing though, but thats another matter.
For our LBG fishing we tend to put back the bigger fish though as they're more localised resident fish and consistently taking those from localised populations is going to have an effect on average size of fish in the area. Hopefully those snaps will do some spawning along the way also and keep their "big" genetics in the gene pool.

I almost never take my limit, but vey occasionally I will for things like my sister inlaws wedding. The problem with reducing the limit is I very much doubt it would ever be increased & knowing the way the government works any reduction in rec bag limits will get passed on to the commercial boys.

If you don't need 9 then don't keep 9! If you have a few people to feed then isn't it great to have the option - some people fish for sustenance Lat35Sth? Everyone's circumstances and needs are different and it's very self-centred to think otherwise.

If you increase the size limit on snapper, I'm sure the 9 limit will come down...
I take my 9 allowable fish, sometimes have taken less.
What I do with my fish is my buisness, don't like it...
I don't sell either...
I like my fish fresh! Then discovered vacuum packing
Tip: cheap man vacuum, use a piece of garden hose & suck out the air in a zip lock

whats that dvd about that is filmed in Australia, big reds of mungaduna or something, awesome fishing but there set limit in the state was 1 snapper per person per day, when we get to this state of affairs I wonder who will be whinging when he has his 50k boat 10k of gear and was once allowed to take 9 but ..........

Gday Guys,
I rekon if the limit is 9 & you wanna take 9 then go for it.
if you catch 25 & only take home 5 then thats cool too,
but please dont bag someone for taking their legal limit!
Just a quick question, If you had to choose, which of the following options would you prefer.
a) a lower bag limit of say maybe 4
OR
b) a limit of only 1 fish over say 70 cms and still have a total bag limit of 9?
Im just interested in hearing what you guys think..
I live in Sydney & just wish I could catch 1 legal snapper in the harbour!!
Cheers

Nice one Craig, to be honest I cannot answer you...you have a good point
Anyway isn't there somewhere down south, maybe Melbourne or Adelaide where Snapper is something like 10kg and upwards only...and then around Perth areas only one allowed or something like that??

Gday BA,
I was thinking the same thing...well sort of.
I rekon you Kiwi's are so lucky to have such an awesome fishery with such a relatively low population.
no fishing licence or boat driver's license!!
Ill be over in January so please save some 20 pounders for me!!
P.S what would happen if they decided to close some snapper grounds in NZ for one month a year???

I was bought up to share and to this day i give most of the catch to my crew, keep a bit for me and the mrs or if its just me and the mrs out i keep some for friends and family around the country.
My family in the south island appriciate a bit of smoked kingfish, marlin or snapper and i always take a chilly bin full of frozen kaimoana down to share around the whanau while i am down there. The farmer that owns the land i go hunting on in the high country (who dosnt get out for a snapper fish very often) appriciates the fish. The chilly bin always comes home full of meat and then i generally share that around mates up here who dont get out hunting!
My mates old man who cant get out fishing but does a lot of white baiting is always sending white bait up to thank us for the crayfish and scallops.
I always remeber as kid families swapping a pig for sheep or half a cattle beast for for an endless supply of eggs/milk etc.

Spot On Dave, We all have those people in our lives weather it be family or friends/ or both that are always helping out in ways that makes our lives what they are, We are privileged to be able to get out and catch good quantities of fish and in doing so can legally keep more than our personal selfs can eat, If this fish can be given to the people that are forever helping you out in whatever way they do so then why the hell would you let it swim away!! There are plenty of people that love nothing more than a good feed of fresh snapper but may not be fisherman them selfs and like most could not afford to pay 40+ a kilo for snapper, And as Dave said nothing better than being able to swap some fresh snapper for some venison or whitebait or whatever it is if you cant get it yourself.

Not that it will add that much to the subject but I agree with you Raging Bull. I very rarely take my quota, but will not feel guilty when I do. Lovely old maori couple next door are afflicted by severe seasickness and family have moved away. I always catch 1 fish for them, pensioner over the road is too sick to leave the house, 1 for him. 2 or 3 for my family or more if I have guests. Whats more important is to try and overcome buck fever. I will know before I leave the house how many fish I can use without being greedy, A livey tank is great for this. Every fish can be counted at the end of a session and excess if any, can be released.

For the record in the waters around Perth in Western Australia each angler is permitted a daily catch of two snapper and the minimum size is 500mm. No snapper can be taken between the dates of 15 October and 15 December. There is a snapper spawning ground just south of Perth and that has separate restrictions with respect to when you can fish in that area.
Commercial fishing for snapper is banned in Perth waters.

Fish Addict, we still share the gulf with the Com's they have a pretty large quota to be caught and the bulk of it is done during spawning.... methods used are longlining an Danish seine trawlers that is inside the gulf only... whole snapper at Pac"in"save are selling right now at $9.99kg which is pretty cheep considering gas over here is regular $1-95lt....

Lethal $9.99/kg is very cheap. Looked at whole snapper on ice this morning at the local supermarket and was A$15.99/kg (around NZ$20). I doesn't seem particularly smart to me for the comms to be targetting spawning fish. Short term gain. Sort of like ****ting in you own nest I would think, but then again, I don't know the details of your fishery.
In the last few years in WA we have seen the introduction of severely reduced bag limits for the most popular targetted table fish and the introduction of fishing licences ($40/annum). I would have to say that this has not been received well by all. I think the main failure has been the lack of meaningful scientific evidence supporting the need for the restrictions by the fisheries dept. The regular fishos are mostly OK with the restrictions because they can take their two snapper regularly. It is mainly the less frequent fishos that consider they are being hard done by. Sorry for the ramble - just an insight as to what's going on over here.

I hope our GOVT will never achieve what Aus govt has in regards to licensing. Although a few things such as limiting the catch during spawning is something worth considering for the future...but then our fisheries is not about the future its all about a quick $.
Catch what you bloody hell want to catch, as long as your within your legal limit and your not going to let it go to waist. I keep a heap of fish, but nothing gets wasted, heads frames...nothing but the guts (with the odd exception). It all goes to those who need it, and with our govt taking so much, fresh fish and home grown veggies is the only thing they don't get there dirty mits on. Personally I like to put back any snap over 10lb, imo they have the better genes and produce better off spring, I'd never force anybody to do this as its only a personal choice. Now that is spawning time for snapper, I'll be trying to select only males to take home. And wont be keeping my limit...unless its needed for something.
Saying somebody should get a punch to the head for keeping more fish than you would is just ...well I guess I should stop there.

at the moment our snapper fishery is pretty good but we have quite a few idiots taking more fish than they are suppose to, like some got caught the other day with over a 100 and that is what gets up my goat, plus the odd com has been caught dumping fish which is just ridicules as well.... i like what someone was saying the other day about crushing the offenders boat/vehicle that was used to do the poaching, is this something you guys are doing?????
------------- Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing

I am not familar with the practice of crushing boat / vehicles in relation to poaching offences here in WA. Boats and vehicles can be confiscated by the authorities and it is my understanding that these are sold. Crushing of cars does happen here but more in relation to traffic offences. Get caught hooning and its one, two, three strikes and you out - car crushed.
