well i was talkin to a mate last nite and he showed me some photos of a marlin he caught while fishing off tauranga and he caught it on a bloody corn cob they had been out for a cupla days with not much happinen on plastic when the deckie said try this  .the husk was pulled back and was the skirt end and the narrow end of the cob was cut at 90 degrees to leave a flat face they then used a large needle to thread the trace thru with 2 large sized hooks beneath the husk. geeze at 5 cobs for 2 bucks that makes for cheap rigs anyone else tryed this b4

Were the hooks made of #8 wire ski? I'd think that anything less would be sacrilege

That's a pretty amazing tale & I'm sure it will put shivers down the spines of the likes of Peter Puk etc.

Captn Asparagus will note this & I would expect a new strain of super asparagus to hit the market for the new game season.

Did you see any pic's of the said lure attached to the fish? Were they black & white?

Mmmmm, food for thought!

Uncle, sorry, but my asparagus does not make a great marlin lure, not having the tassle-ey bit trailing behind, BUT! I does indeed make a superb tuna bullet. Indeed, Cedar plugs were 1st invented by the ancient romans as bluefin tuna lures duplicating the even older etruscan trick of using large asparagus spear with forged bronze hooks threaded thru them .

Should anyone wish to try my specially hand selected Jumbo grade Tuna lure size asparagus spears, please let uncle know, as I am sending him a consignment of them for him to encase in epoxy, rig up and then sell on to those select few "In-the-know" fishermen around the world that we have told about this lethal secret lure.

regards,

Stu. (hah! Corn cobs! Pfah! Amatuers! Real fishermen use asparagus!)

Stu, that was supposed to be a secret.  MacSkippy Green was to be released later in the year!

Thinking about the corn cobs ski, were they cooked? Could make a huge difference.

I also wonder if the same guy ever tried trolling bananas, now there's an action packed fruit.

On a similar tack, I once caught a 6lb Tench from a local lake using a Daisy flower as bait . Just tried it out of shere boredom on a slow day.

CAPT. STU. Me and the missus tried Asparagus for the first time in our lives last week, because of you in fact. Very nice too. Any suggestions on best recipes/cooking methods?

I've always wondered about the "Fruit Salad" lure. Didn't Matt catch marlin on bananas at the Wanganella Banks?

This is a photo taken from Sam Mossman's book, Saltwater Gamefishing in New Zealand.

Food for thought, perhaps?? (sorry, couldnt resist)

Right ski, I've taken all that on board. A hard rough husk it is!

This summer I'm gonna "airate" the water like you wouldn't believe.

Wonder how the corn cobs would have gone at the Wanganellas? They may have doubled the catch
