Don't expect a Gurnard Guru comp we're just testing the waters. A good one this year will perhaps see a bigger effort next year.

Neil, if it gets 50 anglers I'll be happy, if it gets a hundred, well the prizes will be better not that they wont be goodies anyway.

It's a CSFC event and those of us running the event will be well known to the regulars here and about Wink.

With a fail like that Derek - taking the boss' name in vain you may find yourself the 'Celebrity Chef' on the end of a BBQ scraper - I can easily alter the flyer Clown.

As far as advice on where to fish I think you'll be best following Skoti and his mate Gerald around. What size hook were you trailing behind that Lion Red lure to score that fish??

Be good to see some of the fishing.net crowd there, mind you we're everywhere these days eh!Thumbs Up

Billy, I know you will appear ar one of oour comps one day, man you so have to fish the One Base some time. Good opportunity to check us out.

ET in the muddy, didn't you fish the One Base from ET Boulder? If you consider a name change to Enki Dropa Rig then you and Raging Bull may have a show.

Lethal, show us some mad gurnard catching skills!

Anyways me and the other fulla going to finalise the rules (there wont be many) this weekend at some other fullas place while we drink beers and gaze out over the whitecaps, then we'll kick this off proper like.

Grunta, catch up we will, couple of ideas I'd like to talk about re the site and of course we'll talk dirty about gurnard.

ps a mate of Gruntas and a real top bloke and fisherman, told me of a boat named Gurnard Fkr, really made me laugh and would have been a great name for this comp.

It is time to raise the interest levels in this one. Tickets are for sale for this inaugural event at DKM Fishing & Marine in Waiuku. If it is a problem getting there, tickets are also available on the day at Te Toro. Just remember to be back at Te Toro and in the weigh in queue by 4.00pm. Beer is BYO. BBQ is free. We have a great covered in facility the same venue as our One Base & Ice Breaker comps.

Gurnard fishing has been either really good or rather hard. My fellow gurnardophile John Moran and I fished hard from dark til dark for a measly 8 fish each last Saturday, still a good feed, but this time last year we had our limit in only a couple of hours. John gets out a lot and has had some awesome catches recently. My son Matthew and I only caught 4 on Sunday but three were big fellas.

John and I are running this thing and thewre is a reasonable amount of interest locally, be great to see a good show of fishing.netters, if it's a goody we'll ramp it up next year.

There should be tickets still available ( I hope so as I haven't got mine yet ! )
And yes you can definitely catch these from land based fishing .

Yeppp Skoti is right on both counts, a friend of John Morans regularly gets 1kg+ gurnard surfcasting. Tickets available from DKM Fishing & Marine in Waiuku or on the day between 7 and 9 at Te Toro. Any problems with tickets drop me a PM and I can get more!

I'm looking for a good turnout for this comp seeing as no one got their fix at the Gurnard Guru this year. I live right by the venue so I will have a real good idea on the weather, it will take big weather to pull the pin as there is shelter in most winds.

As my friend Rocko says, the best gurnard are generally in the harbour. We've opened it to the West Coast so that if the bar is crossable some may choose to catch some snapper with their gurnard.

Noobzeeland ... I have a few posts on gurnard catching hints or you could subscribe to the on line magazine  http://www.nzfisher.co.nz/ - http://www.nzfisher.co.nz/

I have written an article for the next issue.

I'm also happy to give some tips here if  you want just fire away...

OK this is still a goer at this stage!

Just got home after visiting John Moran and he will have the latest on the weather situation tomorrow on his radio spot sometime between 7.20 and 7.40 on 1476am.

The prize list is looking good with some good spot prizes and raffles also doing the rounds.

BYO beers and there will be a complimentary BBQ.

There's plenty of local interest but with sales on the day you never know just how many will turn up. No need to be a gurnard expert, we will be using Channel 5 on the day if you're struggling to catch give me a call and I will tell you what I know.

We know of one boat (Skoti's mate Gerald) who is planning on heading out at midnight if the conditions allow. That's keen!

I'll keep you up to date on here as the day progresses.

In my experience a lot of confusion is encountered once 12 am times are
stipulated, as to whether it means just past midnight or just past noon.

Presume it means just past midnight onwards but might be prudent to
clarify.

Well it's done and dusted.

What a snotty day. The harbour was beautiful til the tide stopped running and all of a sudden the dreaded wind against tide thingy kicked in. Around lunchtime a quick check on nowcasting peeged the wind at Manukau Heads 47knots peak with an average of 38 knots. So was a little nasty out there.

Winning fish didn't go to a forum member but it did go to a forum boat, congrats ZUKMAN and his mate Lyndsay Russell for a fish weighing 1.18kg.
Nice.
2nd prize and it was no surprise went to Manukau legend John Moran with a fish a little smaller ... obviously. Three Castlepoints ago  i could have told you what it weighed but that moment has passed by.

John & Susan Ra fished with me and Arron, unfortunately I couldn't quantify all the boasting by putting fish in the bin and three of us went home without any gurnard. Arron just had to show off by taking out 6th place (Castlepoint memory) and Skoti's dad Barry managed 5th with an identical weight fish which was weighed in earlier than Arrons.

I did manage an unusual catch though ... a stargazer, another pb.... well i have to put some positive spin on it, it was THE ONLY FISH I CAUGHT!!

We ended up with around 40 anglers not too bad considering the extreme weather but hey nobody died and it was all good in the end.

Thanks John & Susan awesome! They even gave a hand at the weighstation giving Wefaknis a hand. Even Craysee turned up even though he is moving house - he will be in one heap of trouble when he got home.

Aluminator ... did you sleep in bro???

Big big thank you to Gerald Muir for donating some spot prizes and of course our sponsor DKM Fishing and Marine in Waiuku.

OK Steve ... you got some pics for us?

Congrats to Lindsy for the biggest carrot of the day Clap
A great comp that will no doubt get better each year .
Big ups to Smudge and John Moran for putting this together , to John Ra and Wefaknis for their work behind the scales and calculator and to the sponsors DKM and my mate ( generous ) Gerald who gave some prizes from the prize he won at the Gurnard Guru Clap Thumbs Up
I had big dreams of winning this comp and being the king of the grunta hunter .
Dreams so big I could see them wif me own eyes ......

But twas not to be Cry
Dad did allright with a bang on the kg carrot taking out 5th Clap
He might've got 6th or 7th had I not dragged him to the frount of the weigh-in line ( sorry about that Arron , OK not really LOL )
5th , 6th & 7th heaviest carrots were all 1kg , Johny Morans 2nd place went 1.13

So who was the F-netter who , on leaving the green shed rrrrrsed over by the gate , getting mud all over his pants/jacket/chilliebin/hands .
The lights were off at the green shed and darkness prevailed ...
... I guess we'll never know the answer to that one Embarrassed

Wow! Here it is from 10 years ago! Not much has changed, I still haven't won it. I used to run this single handed with either Wefaknis or Skoti doing weigh in (the only real work done) and we had no cash prizes.

This year I'm going to win it homies and if I do I'm getting a gurnard tattoo to celebrate. Was thinking of something like this
