| in 12 trips down there I have never seen anyone fishing in the "closed" area... most people fish the rises for kings. I havnt read Pollocks report but have been out with Baker and have seen a lot of boats fishing the area of the rises. John Baker was one of the first to charter the area and Im sure that those who fish there often will agree that both Kingy and puka fishing is not what it was a few years ago. |

Bazza... Have a read of Rick's latest report in the BoP Report section on this site......I wasn't aware that John was on the steering committee and has been taking cattle truck loads of spear fishermen to the...get this...Volkners to target trophy Kingfish?....I have never met John but seems a little "off" to me? Guess we should be all be extracting 3 fish at 75cms per day from that area till the reserve is set in place.....grrrrrrrr...... these green mailto:b@stards">b@stards are dividing and conquering at an alarming rate! |

good point kerren....its getting to the point where we might as well get our limits and take what we can while we can .... certainly frustrates me trying to help people with surveys and putting back fish here there and everywhere then some pricks who dont even fish tell you that were to blame...!!! i feel for the commercial boys but how come we dont just say that commercial is limited to 10k offshore so that the rest of us can fish in piece with stocks looking after themselves....its a simple plan but once again money is the dust in their eyes....why save the kahawai if some seiner is going to plow through and collect the whole shoal.....my couple i throw back will just end up in someone fish fingers in japan so whos winning here....

Cattle loads...interesting as not many people could get out there before Xmas and his boat take 6 over night and maybe 8 for a day trip. Interesting also to not that John was one of the first to get involved with the 1 per day and must be 1 meter long. I know plenty of people that take their limits and John has never let us take more than 1 each and has always tried to convince us that a max of 1 each for the weekend is far better. I suspect that the rivilry between them may be now in print with only one side being "voiced". May pay to look at Johns version before makeing our minds up truck laod== 6 people May not be a truck as I see it? I actually like both skippers so am not trying to side either way |

I dont think it is a "taking sides" situation, however I can tell you that the fishery at the volkners is as healthy as Ive ever known it to be and that is due to the protection measures that were already in place by the users. The marine reserve was not put in place to conserve "kingfish" the reasons behind the reserve from the minister himself and DOC was for the cultural significance and the flora and fauna found on the ocean floor. Interesting really...... considering the only boats that anchor at the volkners are the dive boats, you dont catch kingis by anchoring there...so where is the threat to marine life?? |

| cultural significance be dammed, to much of this goes on......the charter boats have an agreement....which u are part of........no need for a reserve......i agree.......u don't anchor over that crap//drifting is best |

| Its always good to get both sides allright Barrie but if he was on the steering committee to have Volkners declared a reserve and is now taking spearos to that very place he is a hypocrite of the highest order and deserves a spearshaft up his ass. |

Geeez Wayne, do you propose to do that with tanks or freediving?
A point that seems to be overlooked is the commercial guy, once a deckie on Pursuit & Zambucca, who is out there at White & Ranfurly, going like stink, catching upwards of 6 ton per trip! & I'm talking about Kingfish! That point was published but seems to have been largely ignored. I think you better take a full quiver when you sort this lot out Wayne |

if the reserve is for "cultural" reasons then I would not be a supproter as I too would have trouble in understanding why 22 miles out to sea could have any reasoning but if its to totally protect a very small part of a large area, then Im in total support.although I would like to see ancourages similar to the Poor Knights installed.. If it was the whole area or a larger area, I couldnt support it. I will see what I can find out |
