LegaSea should wind up their members to vote on this...
out with the Comms, and considering they are doing no one any favors in the way they are driving around peeing off Rec's this could be a huge wake up call to change their attitude towards the rest of fleet intent on catching a feed..

Saw a doco on choice tv ch 12 last wednesday, called Montys Catch. Was about the last of the traditional fishing communities in the u.k. Families that had fished for generations. Whole community based around commercial fishing that was sustainable. govt regs and declining fish numbers were pushing many of these commercial fishers out. Quoted was --80 % of U.K fish are now caught by 10% of the fishermen.---ie large vacumn cleaner trawlers. For every ton of fish landed 3 ton were thrown back by these trawlers. Its no different here. We are heading same direction & fast. Think 2nd part is on this coming wednesday.? @ 7.30

"Why only the gulf? Should be all areas in close to shore where recs go..." yeah far comment... but things have to start somewhere.....1 harbour at a time.. like marine reserves... one at a time... hmmm.. maybe not a good idea, the whole hauraki eventually a reserve maybe?? thinking that thru a little more thats exactly what will happen if the current rape of the gulf continues...there will be no choice.
peeing off Rec's this could be a huge wake up call to change their attitude" nah m8.. they could not give a stuff to public opinion recs or otherwise.... bottom line its illegal for them to to do so unless it effects returns to shareholders.. by law directors are obliged to maximize shareholder returns withing the law... thats how its worked since the dutch east inda trading company 1st formed a limited company and issued shares.
But public opinion and election year... in a area of high population and a few marginal seats...

Seems pretty obvious ,except to the authorities and those with economic vested interest, that it is plain stupid and shortsighted to trawl any nursery area that holds spawning and juvenile fish . That is a blatantly simple and obvious fact. That is clearly why we only have 20% of snapper left. They will try and convince everyone that recreational fishing is to blame. In a small way ,possibly, but not the main cause by any means. Trawling is a archaic ,primitive method of fishing that belongs in the dark ages. Overseas they are fast waking up to this. But not so far in head in the sand N.Z . It would take a inshore fishery collapse to wake them up ,and that probably is the way we are heading.

Shouldn't have the NZ herald say, Should commercial fishing be banned in the places that have been fished down to 6%, Oh that's right NZ herald is a Auckland paper, Can't have the nasty old comm guys in our backyard, Lets push them where they have already raped.

Get rid of the trawlers most definitely and get rid of offshore factory type boats fishing out outer reaches. We need to be able to catch a feed for family, friends and neighbours more than we need some rich cock smokers getting richer…

personally I have no problem with NZ longliners. But trawling withing 50 kms from shore NZ wide to me is a no no
|

Date Posted: 04 Jan 2014 at 6:32am
I really think that we need to separate trawling and long lining. The catch from a long liner is a lot more selective and there fore a lot less waste. Most are very small 2 man operations and create a lot less problems than trawlers. I would suggest they probably waste less than recreational?

Should be more than H.G. We are told that BOP has just 6% of snapper bio mass left. Ponder that ,just 6%. And they still trawl it as if nothing is wrong. In most developed nations the cut off is 10%. At 10% the fishery is deemed collapsed and they close it right across the board. Friend used to take a charter every now and then out to the cordell Banks ,just North of San Francisco & about 2 hours motoring. Then about 10 years back it was decided just one species of rock fish out of many species was becoming scarce. Fishery was closed just like that,to everyone .

I ain't arguing, but it ain't gunna happen guys. Trawled or long lined, they are only taking an allocated share of the stocks. I agree that an increased proportion of the catch should be long lined, but this is not always practical. And no one is allowed to say comm fishing should be banned if they ever have fish n chips, sushi, fillet of fish, salmon pate, surimi, or any other commercially fished product. Me, I like gurnard with me chips. So I for one support commercial fishing . However, it could definitely improve its game. I also agree with work six, trawlers should be forced out of the B.o.P.... For at least a decade. The hauraki fishery is three times more robust and can obviously handle an increased commercial harvest!

The fishing out of Colville this year was bloody awful. Many of the guys who usually came home with a good haul were struggling, my thoughts?, I bet the area was hammered by trawlers for the week up to Xmas...so how do you fight that?
When on a charter out of Kawhia, the skipper told of how a raglan based guy would trawl on thursday and friday right outside of Kawhia harbour, leaving him with slim pickings for his paying clients... it stinks, and eventually some people are going to get ****ty and do some drastic things.

The trawler guys have hammered the inner gulf ( Gannet Rock area and western side of the Corro to death this year )have photographed them in action along with their killing of a large amount of small undersized snapper and gurnard ) Also spotted 1 just about on the beach hauling up at Tiri.

Im in the middle of that area and the people that have been fishing the areas I advised them to fish have been getting good hauls. Most of the locals are finding this season the same as it normally is.
Do you normally fish the area or are you new to it?

And I can back that 100%.. often out weekdays seen them go from gannet to down past orere and following around the 30 m line outside shag and just of Anita / kauri ...to at least 1/2 way across the furth.
Talking to ppl and the results from our own days out... and long lining.. ...fishing up around jackson, down thames waiheke channel , gannet, shag, outside pouni, Clevendon flats (nothing for months) etc..... "Very patchy..." is the description, be it softbaiting or burley up big time. It is not much better (no .. no better) than the 'hard fishing ' since April, thru winter off the rod or long line.

Sn 1 is a big area. Commercial quota 4500 t. So what is there to stop the trawlers concentrating in certain areas even well outside their home ground. If its getting hard in the BOP can those trawlers fish the gulf instead along with those that normally fish the gulf. Or can they all decide to focus on Northland the next season if the gulf & BOP is quiet, and so on.So is fishing effort concentrated in certain areas where the remaining fish are holding regardless of where the trawler is based. Could make huge difference how any given area fishes each year

trawling at orere pt,that is well inside the trawl line the trawl line goes from about flat rock ,kawau is, to happy jack, coromandel.so if they trawl inside the line they need reporting.i very much doubt they are in at daylight but i could imagine trawlers in uncover of darkness. The shallows at kawakawa bay 4m water fish well for pannies this weekend.same spot i have always fished at.

your onto it cirrus, all SNA1 area is roam free, no one Comm is tied down to a specific area inside SNA1, yep can all go target one area until it is trashed, nothing at all stopping them..
i have said this before and it looks like it might be happening now, if they used similar tactics to scolloping/farming paddocks, they would hit an area once every 3 years at a time, destroying the fishing in one area for one to two years then returning on the 3year again just as it starts to improve...

That could lead to a very uneven harvest. Imagine the unlikely event where all quota was taken from H.G spawning schools. Would be interesting to see catch figures from different areas in sn1,say North land ,H.G ,Bop over a period of years with monthly catch data. Be interesting to see where and when the most tonnage comes from.

i just read in the NZ Fishing News that NZ Sportfishing Council are complaining that MPI want to pick the representatives for the REC group, now that can only mean one thing, so they can push straight through any legislation that MPI/Quota Holder think fit without opposition,
plus i read NZ Sportfishing Council are pushing to have SNA1 split into 3 separate section, which we are talking about right here...
so watch your backs as MPI try to sneak more crap through under the Radar while its cooling down....

MPI want to pick our negotiating reps. !! Hard to believe that any govt ministry could be so cheeky . So in other words they want lame recreational reps to do sweetheart deals with.. There is only one answer to that and that is no way. Sooner than later we will have to draw the line in the sand and be counted, every one, if we want any future say in our fishery

The whole thing stinks more then rotting fish...
Breaking up SNA1 into 3 areas could well enable them to shut an area down to suit their needs looking after the Coms, restricting the Recs allowance . They put in self appointed mouth pieces that will not look after the Recs. It is dominated by Commercial interests with the Recs being a pain in the A Yes this is the start of trying to reduce the Recs even further..JUST WAIT AND SEE

Breaking up SNA1 into 3 areas...
having the area split into 3 would mean the comms cant do what they seam to be doing now, what it would mean is a reduction/take from any area that is under pressure, like BOP at the moment is low on stock, hence extra pressure would be placed on the HG instead, problem of course is MPI are not willing to reduce the Comms take, without reducing ours in a big way, at least with 3 separate smaller areas they cant go running off to another when one is depleted, so what should happen is a huge reduction in BOP, and a smaller reduction in Northland, then on top of this we will have the HG Marine council doing their bit to stuff the whole thing up... cant see much is going to happen in the next 5/6years and by then we will all be screaming...

EXCEPT FOR COMMERCIAL.....They will keep the areas they can operate open to all and Shut down the inner areas bar a few which will have more boats than Queen St shoppers . If you have a bigger boat you can still catch a fish and get you anchor caught in the seine nets as run over you ..Imagine Tiri shut,Flat Rock Shut,Inner Harbour Shut ( as reserves ) and dont forget Waiheke as the divers want this as a reserve as well ...Happpppppppppppy fishing

Yep. Read that too. One way or another the recs will be screwed. Too many vested interests. Iwi are truely over represented on the council and the new marine advisory group/board. Control and revenue is what it is all about. We will either be hit with huge allowance cuts so the commercial side can continue unabated or we will be locked out of certain areas. I will bet my bottom dollar these areas will be prime fishing spots as there is a reason they are prime. Fish live there. So to protect the fish, these areas will become reserves. Will they include the no fishing zones around submerged cables, as these areas, some very large, have been like reserves for years. Bet they will not, and these areas will not even figure in their reserve plans/percentages.

Best not to focus on the shadows of giants. It probably wont happen. They have no substance. And remember that what you focus on is what you get,or so they say.. Nick smith is trying to get the urban green vote, thats all. Wanting more reserves in H.g, when they still trawl spawning and nursery grounds.Isnt that the cart before the horse. Come on Nick if you really know that much about conservation ,get a grip on the real issues.
Meanwhile back in the real world ,no swimming in Mission Bay. Bacterial count too high. And would you believe they dont know why. .
The rec lobby has potential for real strength if organised and is capable of bringing foward some very real progressive vision for our fisheries . Thats where our focus needs to go.
And if we need to protest or make submissions we will when the time comes.
