Went to the 3 Kings recently in search of mega Bass and Kingfish. One of the guys in our group had just re spooled with brand new 37kg Cortland Black Spot braid. The fishing was great for eryone except him.Cry After experiencing several unexplained bust offs we tested his braid using portable scales. The testing was pretty crude, but the line was breaking at 12 to
14 KG. Even considering the crudeness of the test which was the best we could manage considering we were at sea, the braid was sadly lacking in performance. We since tested the reels drag which maxed out at 14kg.
I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem? Or maybe if you recently purcahased the same braid you might like to test it before using it on any serious fish.

Craig0, was the line tested straight off the reel or through the guides? Maybe also check the guides for any nicks, cracks, etc. if it was the latter?

Cortland black spot is 1 of the leading braids for puka fishing,the 37kg constantly breaks at 40 kgs + or -  2kg..i have experienced problems with it breaking when using rods with guides that arent suitable for braid..the tiagra game rods are 1 rod which doesnt like braid,also cheaper rods with roller tips have problems with the braid slipping down the between the roller and the tip..check the stripper guide for a tiny cut in the seat,or run off the braid down to new stuff on the bottom of the spool and check that with the scales.

Hi, Good point regarding the rod guides. I think that can be discounted however. After testing some of the line off the reel we then tested some line direct from the original spool (with the same result) which owner had taken with him in case extra braid was required.
I also thought that Cortland braid was a top brand.Confused

Yes that would seem to be the simple solution. A couple of points though.
The first thing my friend did was take the part spool of unused braid back to the retailer it wa purchased from. This is a large and well known retailer of boats and fishing tackle. They acknowledged the problem did exist and then contacted the importers, who I believe is Douglas Johnson. It would seem that they also accept that there is a problem and apart from offering a replacement spool of braid they also affered a free T shirtConfused
 
THis hardly seems to be much in the way of compensation for a ruined fishing trip. The trip alone cost the guy over $2000. Not to mention the addititional outlay on brand new gear in order to ensure that the trip was successful. A total outlay of something in the vicinity of $4000 for the trip.
 
I'd say a replacement spool of crap braid and a free T shirt is a bit of a slap in the face myself.

 CraigO You can;t expect a retailer to meet the cost of a charter trip based on what you have said.
DJ have acknowledged that there was a problem, they really only have to replace the braid - not pay anything towards the cost of a charter. I've never been on a charter where there wasn't some other gear to use, and anyone going on such a major a charter with a single set of gear needs their head reading.
I hate to think what I spend on gear for such trips but twice the cost of the charter is not uncommon. And I always have spare braid and reels for the kings trips as fishing up there will put even the best of gear to the sword.
 
Posting such a demand on a public forum is a tad out of order mateOuch

I dont really use anything but cortland braid now. Cheap, strong, and bloody good stuff as far as Im concerned. Havnt had one problem with it.

Must agree with Benk, never had and issue with the 37kg cortland use on my Stella 10000 or 20000, found it would break around the same as the top PowerPro braids.

Would not take cortland on a big trip ,if you can afford the trip you can afford to get some top of the line braid and gear, not to say that you could cop a bad batch these things happen, take plenty of spear gear as boulder has mentioned.

On any trip to the kings would take a couple of spools of spare braid, you just dont know what is gonna happen out there

Well I guess we all have our own expectations etc. To Boulder I will say that I was definitly not suggesting that the cost of the charter was an appropriate restitution, that was your assumption. No demand was made Boulder. What I did say was that a free T shirt and a replacement spool of braid was a very poor response. No apology, no gee wizz we better check the batch and see what other unlucky souls ended up with this crap braid, no if you ever want some shimano products then please contact us for a great price. To name just a few great PR suggestions.
The comments regarding cortland braid being a great product are meaningless. The world is full of great products from great companies who make a booboo and then have to fix their cockup. What makes a really great company is how they stand behind their product.
A little PR goes a long way.
 
I guess the person concerned could have taken extra gear. Maybe it would have been another complete identical set, or perhaps another full spool of braid (of the same brand of course because it such a great product). Either solution would of course been of little use.
The point is that if you invest in what is supposed to be quality gear then you should be able to expect reliable performance.
 
To Gimp. please read my post again, I said that it was tested on the boat. Quite crudely I admit, with weighing scales. the difference however between the result of 14kg and the ecpected breaking strain was so significant that it hardly warranted clarification. How the retailer tested the braid I cannot say. I doubt though that they would acknowledge a problem if they were not certain that there was one.

Mate your opening up a can of worms....DJs (shimano agent) stand behind thier products as good if not better than any other company..i had a high end reel break and they flew in parts to fix it and gave it the once over in thier service dept... they told me 4 weeks initially then had it back in 1 week..thats service mate ...real good service,if you think they should recall all the cortland braid and test it after 1 spool has been found by you to be faulty thats just stupid..take the replacement braid and be happy with that and the shirt...DJS are one of the good guys in the tackle industry and sell quality products not cheap crap that doesnt last

Well of2fish. one swallow does not a Summer make (or so the saying goes). I guess you got the warm fuzzies because they looked after you on that occassion.
I did not suggest that they start recalling braid, just that they should be concerned regarding the customers who have been unfortunate to purchase the same batch.
Also I certainly would not wear a T shirt which advertised the product of a company who has left a sour taste in my mouth.
